"Gem baby are you up?" Liz asked from the kitchen
"Yes Mama, I'm awake." Gem said in her room laying down in her bed
"What time you have to work today?" Liz asked
"I work at 8:00 tonight Mama." Gem said
Gem was a beautiful 22 year old fresh college graduate that lived in the projects with her single mother. Gem was a caramel thick beauty that a lot of guys wanted but she never gave them the time of day. Gem was 5 feet 2 inches tall with long silky black hair. Gem had light green eyes with a killer body. Her body was everything a girl wanted, a small flat stomach with a belly piercing , curvy hips that poked out, big perky breast that sat straight up on her chest, a nice firm but juicy ass and short legs that were built from running. Gem had smooth skin that felt like a baby's bottom and glowed beautifully whenever she put baby oil or lotion on. Gem had 3 big tattoos, 1 tattoo was on her back behind her left shoulder and it was a dream catcher. The second was on her forearm on her right arm and it said Royalty. The last tattoo was of her zodiac sign which was a Scorpio, the scorpion was on her left forearm that went from her wrist to her elbow. Gem's name basically fit her appearance but even though she looked like a diva she was the total opposite of that. Gem was a humbled sweet girl that was well mannered and had respect for others. Gem took care of her sick mother that was dying from cancer. Although she had a great relationship with her mom, Gem kept the biggest secret from her that eventually she will find out.
"Morning Mama." Gem said as she kissed her mother on the cheek
"Morning baby." Liz said as she cooked breakfast
"Mama you want me to do that for you?" Gem asked
"That's okay baby I got it." Liz said as she placed the pancake on the plate
Gem turned on the mini T.V. in the kitchen and flicked through the channels to see what was on. Finally Gem went to her favorite show from back in the days when she was younger "Moesha". As Gem watched the show she grabbed two glasses from the cabinet and started to pour fresh orange juice from the refrigerator for both her and her mother.
"Now Gem you know we don't watch T.V. when we're about to eat." Liz said as she brought the food from the stove to the kitchen table
"Mama but you haven't even sat down yet." Gem said
"Gem turn it off now!" Liz said firmly as she put the frying pan in the sink
"Yes Mama." Gem said as she turned off the T.V. and watched her mother sit down
"You ready to say grace?" Liz asked
"Yes." Gem said as she grabbed her mother's hands and closed her eyes
"Father we come to you today to say thank you for everything you've done for us. Thank you for allowing us to have clothes on our backs, food in our stomachs, and allowing us to live to see another beautiful day. You say that if you are for us then no one can come against and for that I thank you again. In the father, the son, and the holy spirit, Amen." Gem said
"Amen!" Liz said
"Baby after breakfast I need you to go to the store across the street and get me a few things for the kitchen." Liz said as she coughed
"Sure what you need Mama?'' Gem asked as she took a bite out of her pancakes
"I need milk, eggs, bread, garlic powder, toilet paper, dish washing soap, cold cuts, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese." Liz said as she coughed again
"Okay , Mama did you take your medicine today?" Gem asked in a concerned voice
"No baby not yet." Liz coughed harder then the last cough
"Okay Mama where is your medicine?" Gem asked as she got up
"It's in the bathroom inside the mirror." Liz cough again
Gem walked into the bathroom to get the medicine with a scared look on her face as she closed the mirror after grabbing the medicine. Gem knew her mother had cancer for quite sometime now and it seemed like each day was getting harder and harder for them both. Gem was scared of losing her mom and Liz was scared of leaving Gem alone. Gem snapped out of her thoughts and went back into the kitchen and gave her mother 2 pills to take with the orange juice.
"Here you go Mama." Gem said as she handed the pills to her
"Thank you baby." Liz said as she took the pills
"Mama I'm gonna go get dressed to buy you those things you need so go lay down and relax and I'll let you know when I'm leaving.'' Gem said as she pushed the chair in
"Okay baby cause I am getting kind of tired." Liz said as she got up
"So go to sleep Mama I'm fine." Gem said
"Okay baby." Liz said as she walked to her bedroom
