Isabella POV
"This teacher is insane, total nut job! I think there's something seriously wrong with him." Riley says as we enter her father's classroom.
"Hi, honey." Mr. Matthews greets her,"You're late to your father's class."
"You wrote her a note." I say, waving a note in the air.
Matthews frowns,"I did?"
"You did." Maya and I say in unison. I pass the note to Maya.
"You did." Riley says after receiving the note, smiling innocently and taking the note from Maya and handing it to her father.
"Mr. Matthews," he reads aloud,"Riley is late. Deal with it."
Maya's handiwork.
"You got my signature down pretty good this time." Matthews says, impressed.
"Oh, it's easy you write like a girl." Maya responds cheerfully, prancing back to her seat next to Riley. I sit on the far right next to Maya, and Riley is on the far left, leaving Maya in the middle. Yogi sits behind Riley, Farkle sits behind Maya, and the seat behind me is empty.
"The Civil War!" Matthews begins.
"The Civil Bore!" Maya says, grinning at us.
"Thank you future Mini Mart Employee of the year." Matthews deadpans, smiling slightly.
"Would she be making more money then you?" I ask him sweetly.
His smile falters and he opens his mouth to respond, but thinks better of it and continues,"The Civil War! Anybody?"
Maya raises her hand hesitantly.
"No you can't." Matthews says disbelievingly.
"A war we fought against ourselves." Riley explains.
"What? You actually studied it?" Matthews asks, shocked.
"No, I'm actually living it!" She wails, dropping her head on her desk and letting her hair obscure her face all together.
"People, people! Are we here to learn or not!" Farkle exclaims impatiently from behind Maya.
"What do you mean, Farkle?" Matthews asks.
"I've been in love with Riley since the third grade," he starts.
Riley throws her hands up in the air and rolls her eyes.
He turns to Maya and myself,"But I'm also equally in love with Maya and Isabella. Some might say the great mystery of the universe will be the first Mrs. Farkle!" Farkle responds, beaming.
"You don't want this." Maya says warningly.
"Bring it on!" He says, and if possible, his smile widens.
"I always thought he'd end up with back-of-the-class Brenda." Riley whispers.
We turn around simultaneously to see Brenda grinning at us and waving enthusiastically.
"Yuck!" Farkle winces like he's tasted something sour.
"Actually, the great mystery of the universe is how you can love three women the same who couldn't possibly be more different!" Mr. Matthews counters.
"We're not so different!" Riley objects.
"May I overstep my bounds?" Farkle asks Matthews politely while raising his hand.
"You always do!" Matthews responds, walking over to sit in Farkle's seat while Farkle made his way to the front of the room.
Farkle flips the name tag perched on Matthews's desk from 'Mr. Matthews' to 'Farkle'.
Farkle slams his hands on Riley's desk, nearly giving her a heart attack,"Riley is the sun. Warm and bright and lights up my whole day."
Farkle then turns to Maya and slams his hands on Maya's desk and jerks his head up to meet her blue eyes,"Maya is the night. Dark and mysterious." He removes his hands and smiles at her adoringly,"The night has always been a mystery to me." Pausing, he adds,"Because I go to bed at 7:30."
My turn.
He repeats the process and says,"Isabella is Mother Nature. Underestimated of her ability. Capable of creating such beauty, but also," he pauses abruptly to make a dramatic affect,"...much destruction. The beauty she creates through art and music is unbelievable, and she will destroy anyone who hurts someone she cares about. She'll do anything for her friends, as would Riley." I blush at his kind words.
Farkle once again faces the class,"How can I love these three different women? How can I not?! Thank you, I am Farkle!" He raises his arms above his head and bows with his arms remaining in the same position. He raises his head up and beams, returning to his seat.
"So, we were indeed trying to find out who we were, as people." Matthews begins again,"Who am I? What should I be? Isabella!" I flinch, jolted away from my thoughts of the mysterious and attractive boy on the subway.
"What does history show you when you don't know who you are?"
I bite my lip and reply,"History shows that bad things happen when you don't know who you are."
Maya looks at me in surprise when I answer. I'm not as rebellious as she is, but I will avoid raising my hand and answering questions.
Matthews opens his mouth to respond but is interrupted when the back door creaks open, revealing...
"Subway boy!" Riley whispers excitedly to us.
He takes the empty seat behind my own, and I turn around to face him.
His bright blue eyes meet my own and my stomach immediately flips over. I gulp, knowing I'm falling for him when my best friend already has.
