Cas had always sensed Dean's longing, it was something that he carried with him as he did his heavenly duties. In a way it had become a great comfort to the angel, it was a constant reminder that Dean was there, that he was alive. Dean's longing, Castiel knew was mostly subconscious, and the longing only increased in intensity when the man was actively thinking of the angel.

Today was different. Dean's longing was stronger than usual, and demanded presence in Castiel's mind. Cas tried to not let this worry him, as this had happened before. From time to time Dean thought of the angel for longer, or more intently. This situation, when it arose caused Cas difficulty with concentrating at the task at hand, thoughts of Dean invading his consciousness. After the first occurrence Cas reflected that these thoughts, distracting as they were could be tamed, and it was not the thoughts themselves that caused incompetency, it was his unwillingness to stop the thoughts of Dean that caused his plight.

Castiel suddenly felt a sharp jolt of emotion within him, spreading from his heart, outward. He fell to the floor, his knees buckling, his hand grasping at his chest as wave after wave of loneliness, confusion, anger, and gut-wrenching despair washed over him. This was not normal.

Amidst his absolute confusion, and pain he recognised these feelings were Dean's, not his own. He struggled to think of an explanation to this, but the flow of emotions were fighting against him, clawing at his heart, urging him to succumb to their power. Castiel used the strength of his grace to target and overcome the foreign anguish, disassociating it from himself. He then got to his feet gingerly, unsure if he would fall again.

Now free of the overpowering emotions, Castiel searched his mind, trying to answer the bizarre event. He racked his brain, thinking of everything he had learned in the billions of years that he had been alive. When he remembered something his brother Gabriel had told him, he realised with clarity that this had occurred due to his profound bond with Dean.

"Human's are inherently emotional beings, they have the power to share emotions with each other. But sometimes, if a human and an angel share a bond, then it is possible for the angel to experience the emotions of the human."

Castiel was unsure of what he should do. Dean's longing was still persistent than ever, if not more. He debated whether he should speak to the man of what just happened, whether to tell Dean and make him worry about the privacy of his own feelings, or to not tell him and attempt to find future prevention of this occurrence himself. The feelings he had experienced were not his own and he had no right to them, this he knew.

Before Cas had the opportunity to come to a conclusion, he heard Dean's voice, it rung through him.

"Cas, I need you."
