~~~"You're okay, just tired. You'll be fine, I promise. Let's get back to the TARDIS." he said, pulling his shirt on without buttoning it. He wrapped me in his jacket and picked me up, not bothering to place his braces back on his shoulders.
He set off, walking back to the TARDIS with me in his arms. I laid my head on his bare chest, the steady sound of his heartbeats lulling me to sleep.~~~
I woke up, my cheek pressed against the glass floor of the TARDIS. I was still wrapped in the Doctor's jacket, and I looked up to see him hopping around the controls, pulling levers and flipping switches. Suddenly the TARDIS began to shake, and I rolled out of the Doctor's coat, letting out a squeak of surprise. He glanced down at me, beaming.
"Ah, you're awake!" He yelled over the noise of the machine. He let go of the controls to reach out to me- but with another lurch of the TARDIS, he was thrown onto his back a few feet away.
"Yeah, I am. Did you just come right in and dump me on the floor?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him as the shaking stopped and the TARDIS began to fly smoothly.
"You were only out for a moment, once we got back here. And besides, I didn't want to put you to bed in dirty clothes." He said, getting up when the shaking stopped. I got up as well, handing his charred jacket back to him.
"Well thank you for that, but I'm going to have a bath now and change." I said, running down the hall, my feet cold against the floor.
"Wait!" I yelled, scurrying back into the room. The Doctor glanced back at me with an amused expression on his face. "We need to go back to Gallifrey."
He frowned.
"We can't. I reinforced the timelock on it; just in case there are other Daleks on the planet. Why?"
"Damn... I left my shoes there."
One bath and ten minutes later...
"So, Doctor, where do we go from here?" I asked as I walked out of my room in a fresh pair of jeans and a t-shirt, towel-drying my long hair. I found him working beneath the controls of the TARDIS, sitting on a makeshift swing he had attached to them.
"Oh, I don't know. I hear Xenalan 7 is beautiful this time of year. Or we can go sightseeing on one of the moons of Moriah. The French Revolution is fairly exciting, if you're inerested in that sort of thing; and frankly, who isn't?"
The Doctor looked up at me, wiping a smudge of grease off the end of his nose.
"How about... you take me to America? I've never been." I said casually,  looking down and playing with my hair.
“You’re kidding, right?”
“What..?”
"You spent how many years on earth, and never went to America?" He said incredulously.
“I was busy, alright! I was a journalist, I went to college, that doesn't leave much time for travel." I told him defensively.
He looked at me with an odd expression.
"Did you have a family?"
I was a bit taken aback by his sudden question.
"Did I have a- um.. no? Why?"
"Oh, no reason." the Doctor said, returning to his regular old self. "So America, yeah? I know the perfect place, too."
Giving me a sly grin, he danced back over to the controls and punched in coordinates. He threw a glance my way that clearly read, 'hold on tight'. Once I had my hands firmly wrapped around the railing behind me, he pulled the main lever, launching the TARDIS into the Time Vortex.
After about 45 seconds of absolute chaos, the noise of the TARDIS brakes made its way into the control room and everything slowed to a stop as we landed. The Doctor caught me eyeing the many knobs and buttons on the controls and smiled widely.
“Some day I’ll teach you how to fly her.” he offered.
“I’m not exactly sure I want to learn from you..” I responded, teasing a bit.
“Very funny. Stay here Cal, I’ll get you something more time period- appropriate to wear.” he stated, jogging off through a door opposite me.
A few minutes later he came out with an old-looking, simple brown dress, gray cloak, and a white cap resembling a bonnet. I thanked him, took the clothes and started walking towards my room.
“Er, Cal..” The Doctor called after me.
“Hmm?” I casually glanced over my shoulder, not turning completely around.
“If you have any- if you need- if the buttons are giving you trouble, just, you know.. don’t hesitate to ask for help.” he stammered, his cheeks rosy.
I lifted an eyebrow at him, a smile finding its way onto my face.
“What makes you think I’ll need help?” I answered confidently.
He looked back at me blankly, his mouth opening and closing a bit like he didn’t quite know what to say. My smile grew wider as his ears began to blush.
“Only kidding.” I reassured, turning back and continuing to make my way to my room to change.
I walked out a bit later to find the Doctor waiting impatiently for me at the TARDIS front door. He had switched his tweed coat out for a simple black felt one that went almost to his knees and was decorated with dull brass buttons down the front. Walking up, I ran my hand down a row of buttons and glanced at him.
“Why aren’t you wearing your normal coat?” I questioned.
“I like to change things up a bit. Besides,” he said, shrugging. “this one’s cool.”
He tucked a lock of hair that had fallen loose of my bonnet back into it as I laughed at his childish use of the adjective.
“C’mon, where are we? Let’s go, I can’t wait!” I urged excitedly.
“Well you’ve always wanted to go to America, haven’t you?” He grinned and took my hand in his, using the other to open the TARDIS doors.
