Kagome, Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Kirara, and Shippo had had a long day full of slaying demons and looking for shards of the Shikon Jewel. They were ready to settle down for the night.
"Kagome, I found a cave." Shippo's voice echoed in the dark space as the rest of the group gathered around.
Kagome smiled. "This will probably do nicely, thank you, Shippo."
Inuyasha was already sniffing around for possible threats. "Inuyasha, is anything wrong?" the schoolgirl asked.
"There's a funny smell, -Aha!" The half-demon held up his discovery.
"Inuyasha, that's moss."
"Um. . . I knew that! It's special moss!"
"He's right, for once, Lady Kagome." Miroku intervened. "This moss is extremely rare, and it is said to have potent healing powers, as well as glow in the dark."[i completely made that up so don't go searching for glowing magic moss in caves XD]
"Oh! Well, that will be useful. . ." the embarrassed priestess laughed.
After that little episode, the group made camp as usual. When he thought everyone else was asleep, Inuyasha got up from his place against the wall and headed outside, to the edge of the stream nearby.
"Inuyasha?"
He reached for his sword but recognized Kagome's voice, and let her join him.
"I can't believe it. . . It's almost been a year since we first met." Kagome thought back to the day when she climbed out of the well and saw Inuyasha pinned to the tree. He had seemed so peaceful, like he was merely sleeping. Back then, she had had no idea that she would be going on this crazy journey, with a fifty-year old half-demon, no less, and if she had even thought that she might. . .
A glowing light drifting across her vision snapped her out of her reverie. "Inuyasha! Look at the fireflies!"
The half-demon gave no sign that he had heard her, but instead continued to stare out across the water. "You know. . ."
Kagome looked at him curiously. "Hm?"
"I used to watch fireflies. . . with Kikyo, during the summertime."
The girl's heart gave a slight twinge at the mention of Inuyasha's former love. "Huh."
Inuyasha had an unreadable expression on his face, and Kagome didn't question him about what she knew he was thinking. Naraku's betrayal. Kikyo's death. His own grief and lingering feelings for the warrior priestess.
"Hey, Inuyasha. . ." Kagome suddenly said.
"Hm?"
"If. . . If you ever need to just talk, I. . . I'm here. I guess." She stumbled on her words.
"Yeah. . . Kagome, thanks."
The schoolgirl was slightly surprised- and more than a little happy. She supposed Kikyo would always be in Inuyasha's heart, but she appreciated the little sentiments the silver-haired boy dropped occasionally. He may seem rude and uncultured, but he's really a sweetheart. . .
The pair sat in silence after that, watching the dancing fireflies skimming across the water. Kagome took a chance and moved to lay her head on Inuyasha's shoulder, earning a faint blush from the dog-eared boy. Soon, she fell asleep, and only then did Inuyasha dare to put one tentative arm around her still form.
Later that night, Kagome woke up under a blanket, next to the dying fire in the cave. She looked around groggily before spotting Inuyasha, resting against the wall. The girl's features softened into a smile. Knowing he couldn't hear her, she whispered something in his ear, then lay down and went back to sleep.
Inuyasha was dreaming of a village, Kikyo's village. He poled a boat down the nearby river, docked near Kikyo's hut, and waited. Finally, someone came out- but it wasn't Kikyo, or even her little sister Kaede. Instead, Kagome came out of the hut. She smiled gently, and came up to whisper something in his ear. Then, the dream faded, and he slept deeply, her words spinning around in his head.
"No, thank you, Inuyasha. I love you. . ."
