"Apparently not," you confided, glancing down at your feet and back up at him. "We've got a bit of a problem. Our secret's about spent."
"What?" he asked as if in reflex, eyes widening as he tried to think of any way the two of you might have slipped up. "What happened."
"I kinda just got asked to Tony's little holiday get together twice...at the same time strangely enough."
"Twice?" he questioned, arms tightening ever so slightly, although you inwardly smiled at the subconscious reaction. "By who exactly?"
You sighed again, pushing yourself off the door frame as your arms waved about helplessly. "Tony and Clint, and of course with it being Tony, he's turned it into a rather uncomfortable contest, at least for me it is."
"You can't just tell them you're not interested?"
You nodded, although there was more frustration in the movement than agreement. "Believe me, if it were just Clint, I could handle it, but Tony will pester me, and you know how bad I am at faking excuses."
His hands came up to rub at your arms as you stepped towards him in desperation. "Tell him no. He may give all outward appearance to the contrary, but Tony knows his boundaries."
Your pleading gaze turned into a glare, willing him to believe just what a dire situation this was. "He's being very persistent. Clint had to literally pull him off of me." At Steve's re-widening eyes, you held up a hand in exasperation. "Not even exaggerating."
"Right," was all he said, but you were certain he was thinking of taking the punching from the bag and straight to Tony. Eventually he returned back to you and your uneasy expression. "You sure about this?"
Reluctantly, you smiled, stepping in the last of the space between you and taking his hands. "I know we were trying to avoid Tony and his ill humored jokes, and if Tony didn't know, the public didn't know, but," you waved your hand between you, looking up at him with hopeful eyes "how long were we really planning on keeping this up? Besides, it's almost Valentine's Day."
He smiled back at you, and you felt a small sense of relief that the two of you were on the same page flow through you. "Couldn't ask for better timing, huh?"
You giggled nodding happily as he leaned in for a kiss. "So what do you say?" you prompted, returning the attention he paid you. "Be my Valentine?"
"Now that's an offer I couldn't refuse." You giggled...again. It never seemed to fail that when you were alone with Steve, you would fall to the trope of giddy school girl. Maybe part of it was the thrill of a secret romance, but you didn't really see yourself changing even when you two came clean, which was apparently to happen sooner than you thought.
"So how we gonna do this?"
He sighed, hands resting warmly on you back. "You know, I'm gonna be out of character and say we just tell them, no plan needed, and then...we see how it goes." He ended it with a shrug, but although you were pleased at finally not having to look around corners every time you felt like exchanging a flirty comment or two, now that the time had come, you weren't sure how it was going to play out.
"Well, this should be interesting."

In the end, you decided to simply wait and let them come to you. Confrontation wasn't the easiest thing in the world to you, and while you didn't feel so bad at turning Tony down given his approach to the entire thing, you really didn't want to hurt Clint. He had at least been civil about it. Just as you suspected, however, you hadn't got even two chapters further in your book before the two of them found you. Steve was there as well, sitting beside you on the couch with a book of his own, but he was mainly there for moral support.
