It was a cold day in Phoenix. Hey 50 degrees in Arizona is like 10 degrees in New York. I was on my way home from working at the Days Diner and I was tired. It was dark, but I've walked these lonely streets many a late night. I was more afraid of my father than the streets.

My mother died when I was 10 and my father never seemed to recover from her loss. He chose drugs and alcohol over me. He blamed me for her death. If only she hadn't have come to pick me up at school because I missed the damn bus. It was my fault that she was driving in the rain and he reminded me of that every day. He would beat me at the drop of a hat. I could do nothing that impressed him, not my grades or the money I earned for college and to help care for us. I cried many, many nights after a beating wishing I had ran to catch that bus so my mother would be here to protect me.
I am a typical nerd who found my peace in books. I remember Mom reading to me as a child. I wished a prince charming would come in my world, but that's not logical.

As I continued to daydream during my walk I noticed someone walking behind me. As the steps got closer I tembled, afraid. I turned around to see a man staring at me. His eyes schemed my tiny body from head to toe.

"Pretty little thing aren't you. Let's have some fun." He said slurring his words. He was drunk, like my father only he wanted something from me I refused to give. My virginity.

"I am just walking home sir. I don't want any trouble please." I said. My voice was cracking as I watched this man laugh as he walked forward. With each two step he took forward I took one back. I turned to run but he was on me like a lion chasing prey.

I cried out for help as he was dragging me into a pitch black alley. I could smell the alcohol on his breathe. "Please don't do this." I cried as he crushed my back against a wall ripping my top. "Shut up slut. You know you want it." He screamed as he slapped me across my face. There was a metalic taste in my mouth from a ring on his finger cutting my lip.

He pushed me on my knees while undoing his belt. In a swift second he was on the ground cry out as someone hovered over the man kicking and beating him. Finally the drunk stopped moving and my savior approached me. My eyes blurry with tears and his face was covered not to be seen.

"Bella are you okay?" He asked while placing jacket around me. His voice was deep and seductive.

"Thank you for saving me." I said as hold the jacket around my body. "Who are you?" I asked still unable to see his face and I didn't recognize his sulty voice.

"I am someone who cares for you deeply Bella." He caressed my cheek with his finger as I felt an electric shock run through my body. His smell was manly hypnotic almost. "Let's get you home Bella." He said as he helped me up and walked me home.

"What is you name?" I asked. He chuckled and responded, "Call me your Shadow Lover. I'll watch over you always. Just know I care for you Bella and will always protect you."

"Wow my very own Prince Charming." I said as we both laughed and walked. We talked about many things during our walk yet he gave no clues to his identity.

Once we reached my house I turned to thank him again for saving me, but he had already disappeared. I pulled the jacket he placed around me smelling his scent. I smiled as I walked into my house.

The house was dark and very quiet. I quickly made my way to my room glad my dad wasn't there. Closing and locking my bedroom door I relaxed in the warmth of the jacket. I went to my bathroom to take a shower. Once done I looked at my face and saw a bruise forming on my cheek. As I touched it my mind drifted to my hero, my Shadow Lover as he called himself. I think my mother sent me an guardian angel to watch over me. "Thank you Mom. You sent me an angel to watch over me and maybe love me." I prayed as I drifted into a comfortable sleep dreaming of my Shadow Lover.
