Age 6
"Sweetie, put these on, then you can look at it." Daddy hands me a pair of funny looking goggles. Giggling, I take them. "What happens if I don't use the goggles?" His expression darkens. "You'll only see darkness." It quickly brightens again. "Hurry darling, or you'll miss it!"
I unconsciously look up, the orange eye contraption still in my little hands, to face a very bright light. It burned my eyes. I gasp in fascination. "What is it, papa?" "It's called a Total Solar Eclipse. It happens when the moon passes right in front of the sun and completely covers it, leaving us with a few minutes of darkness." Several minutes pass in silence, feeling like an eternity. The light comes back as the sun is uncovered once again.
The day continues as normal and soon, 9pm rolls around. "Alright Sweetie, it's time for bed!" I skip down a short corridor to my room and change into my favorite pajamas. Pink pants and shirt, both adorned with little yellow crowns on them and the word princess is printed across the top of the shirt. "Will you read me a bedtime story? Please?" A look of uncertainty smudged my dad's face. "I don't know, it's getting kind of late." "Pretty please? With a cherry on top?" I kneel on my bed, bat my lashes and clasp my hands together, all while pulling the cutest puppy face I could muster. "Well, alright, I suppose one short story wouldn't hurt." "Yay!" A cheer escapes my lips as my father pulls a purple and silver book from under my bed. The Grimms Fairy Tales, my favorite book in the entire world. "Cinderella, I'm guessing?" Another cheer rises from me as he starts reading. Cinderella is the tale of a lowly maid who goes from rags to riches. We only read it on special occasions because it's my favorite and he wants me to be excited every time we read it.
The next morning, I wake up to the smell of eggs, pancakes, and bacon. I jump out of bed and run to the kitchen. "Wakee, wakee, eggs and bakee!" My father would always say. "I made your favorite! Purple pancakes, with an egg and two slices of bacon!" I pull out a chair and sit down as my father sets a plate and silverware in front of me. Looking down at the food in front of me, I complain. "Papa, the pancakes are gray! They're not purple!" He wipes his hands on a towel and peeks over my shoulder. "Yes they are, they're lavender! Honey, you honestly can't-" he stops short when I look up at him.
My once glittering crystal blue eyes, are now like the sky got captured in a jar of frosted glass. His now lifeless looking black eyes widen and he picks up the phone, frantically calling the doctor. "Yes, mhm, when can we see him? Yes, that would be perfect! Thank you so much." He drops the phone back down on the receiver and turns to me. "Eat and get dressed quickly. We're leaving to see Mr. Flores." I wolf down my food and get dressed. My dad helps me in the car and we drive off to see doctor Flores.
