"Loud shouts awakened her from the deep sleep and when she opened her eyes she saw a child of her own age, looking at her closely.

"You'd better go," he whispered, "when the fight starts, it does not end until Mr. Hernandez gets violent and it's better not to be around. If you do not want to go out the door I can show you a way out the window. "

With her eyes wide open, the girl nodded slowly and let herself be led by Lucas to the window of the small room. As she looked outward, Alma could see the staircase leading down to the side alley of the building, and without any hesitation she just sat down with her legs dangling and dropped.

When they reached the alley she thanked him shyly and disappeared quickly, running towards the street. At the end of the block to the left and then again half a block to the dilapidated building opposite Erroll's pizzeria. Inside, forty-five steps led her forward to the door 2A, through wich without any kind of lock she passed and stopped, attentive. The living room was scrambled and dirty, as well as the kitchen and the small room where Alma went, to look for her mother.

That was the most determining moment of her existence. That damn moment changed everything. And though her life had never been gilded, with drugged parents and empty stomachs, Alma always smiled and she illuminated every dark and resentful soul that would stand in front of her. Until that morning, when without further ado, she knew that her parents were dead. She had not checked their pulse, nor had she felt her mother's cold skin. But the mere sight of them both in the bed, inert, made her understand.

Later, the girl who was no longer so young and so innocent, understood how her parents spent all the money on their addiction. She also understood that sooner or later she was going to have to walk away from them, who never gave her love, who never gave her anything, actually "

There were no tears, nor any demonstration of pain. Just a distant tale, about an innocent girl, hurt and unaware of the life that the future would bring. Just a story. A myth.
