Early Spring 1947
I remember the first day she jumped out of the wooden horse drawn carriage, pulling along a little leather suitcase that seemed to not fit that much. She was only about 6 or 7, small dull dirty blond hair and pale blue eyes as sharp as ice, she was wearing what seemed to be a white night gown. She smiled at me and my mother and father who were shoulder to shoulder right next to me. Father bent down next to her "Hi Harper!" He said. "My names Jacob, this is my wife, Mary" he said, nodding up to mother. " and lastly, this is my son Chris." Mother gave a bright smile and waved at Harper. I was frightened, but gave a small smile along with a little wave. She smiled back. Her smile almost cutting like knives. My life was going to change, this girl is going to be my new little sister.
Our little family lived in a marry home, a nice little house on the hill. We had plenty of money because father was a successful Doctor, so life was fairly easy for our little family, easy enough to give a little girl no one seemed to want a nice, loving home and family. Harper would be sharing a room with me, her bed would be on the right side, mine on the left. We already picked out some cloths and sheets for her, hoping she would like them. And luckily when she saw them, she did.
Harper had a strange back story as far as I have been told, she had been to three other homes, but the family's always gave her back. Frightened at the child like she was some sort of horrid monster. Harper told me while she was sitting in my room at night in the candle light " They said I was a demon from another world, do you think I'm a demon from another world?". I shook my head no. "Good." She responded with a slight smile. It had been about a two weeks since her arrival, it seemed that she was just fine, even when she made those slight remarks about little things, or even randomly. Father said she only does it because of what she has been through. But their was something off about her, though I just couldn't put my finger on it. Though, with Harper there was only one thing I couldn't stand. Her secret. She had a medium sized brown box with strange markings on it. She would never let me look inside, and whenever I would ask her she would always say "Secrets" and smile. She wouldn't even show Mother or Father when they asked, it was always "Secrets." Being only 9 that really annoyed me to have my new little sister keep secrets from me even though we were like best friends.
Later that evening it was announced by mother and father that we would be going on a little vacation in the early morning of spring out to the woods. While Harper and I were being told of this news, she smiled and said "Spring, springs means a new beginning!" and ran off back into our room. My parents looked at each other, puzzled, then looked at me and I shrugged. I walked back into our room to check on Harper. She had her box open and she was staring at it. As I walked in she closed it. "Watcha doing Harper?" I asked. She shrugged and said "secret stuff." Shaking my head "of course you are..." walking it off, I asked Harper if she wanted me to help her pack. Harper sat in silence before giving a sharp smile and quick nod, then I motioned for her to come help me.
Harper and I started packing some cloths for they would be leaving tomorrow, harper seemed extra exited. "have you ever been on vacation?" I asked. "No." "Why not?" "I have never been in a family like this long enough to." After that she smiled, a truly happy smile that brought a smile to my lips. It was truly amazing that my family could make a little girl so happy. At that moment I forgot about how strange Harper could be and let good memories flood in. But then those memories stopped and were place with yet again curiosity, and fear as harper got up and grabbed her mysterious "secret" box off her bed and brought it over to the bag we were packing. "Can we please pack this tonight? I wish not to forget it for our trip." She said. I stayed crouched on the floor over the bag stuffed with cloths staring at the box. "Uh... Ok.." I replied with a little fear in my voice, but apparently Harper didn't notice, and if she did she didn't show and sign of recollection when I said so. I quickly disposed of the box in the packing bag and closed it up. "we should get to bed, big day tomorrow Harper." There is was again, that smile. Harper ran off to brush her teeth in the bathroom, soon I would join her in the bathroom.
