The chilly air of the ice rink was exceptionally thin the day the incident occurred. You were practicing for the upcoming competition with the rest of Yakov's students--Yuri Plisetsky, Mila Babicheva, Georgi Popovich, and your long-time boyfriend, the famous Viktor Nikiforov. The difference was the new guy who, at twenty-years-old, was potentially a new member to Yakov's prestigious team, but Yakov wanted to see how well he worked with the pressure of being around elite skaters before making a final decision.

You glided around the rink with your skates slicing into the ice with every turn and flip. You're the top female skater in the game at this point, so practicing with the group is merely a formality. You would never perform any of your actual programs in front of anyone besides Viktor who helps you for help in return.

You spotted him every once in a while helping a pre-teen Yuri with his footing when you spun around the rink, otherwise, you were just trying to pass the time. Without thinking, you pulled off a flawless triple axel and smoothly drifted over to the barricade to take a small break while still staying on the ice.

"Excuse me, (Y/N)?"

You peered over and saw the, admittedly, handsome Russian and possibly new member, Dimitri, appear next to you.

"Yeah?" you replied.

"I feel weird about asking, but would you mind helping me with my waltz jump? I can't seem to land on my opposite foot and I can't see what I'm doing wrong," he sheepishly requested.

You smiled. "Of course. Come on." You skated over to the more vacant side of the rink with Dimitri following. "Go ahead."

Dimitri kicked off and did a half-revolution in the air but landed on his right foot instead of his left, resulting in his ass colliding with the ice. You titled your head before reaching out to help him up. Dimitri gave you a very embarrassed look at not being able to land such a basic maneuver.

You, still holding onto his arms, crossed them in front of him. "When you come down, your arms are out of place. When you're on the forward outside edge, the balance at the beginning is the most important thing. Now try."

You weren't aware of the impending conversation on the other side of the large rink, which was obvious. Viktor leaned against the barricade with eyes carefully watching you and Dimitri in the most calculating manner.

"What are you doing?" Georgi questioned the white-haired man as he rolled up to him.

"Wondering what Dimitri is doing. He and (Y/N) are practicing a waltz jump, but I saw him doing it perfectly only fifteen minutes ago," Viktor answered innocently enough with his kind nature shining.

"That's suspicious. Maybe he's trying to seduce her. Stealing the girlfriend of the top female figure skater can make his career take off," Georgi said.

Viktor whipped his head to the side, taking his eyes off you. "You don't think that's true, do you?"

Georgi shrugged. "I'm protective of Anya and I would be concerned if she was that close to a good-looking guy like that."

"But they're just skating..." Viktor trailed with a deep frown.

"Isn't 'just skating' how the two of you started off?" he pointed out before drifting back to the corner of the rink.

Viktor instantly brought his attention back to you and Dimitri after Georgi's assessment. Skating is how the two of you met and, although you were incredibly focused on your career at the time, Viktor managed to coarse you into skating with him frequently and he used the most obvious tactics to get close to you like zipping up your jacket and tying your skates for you.

All of that worked for him, so why wouldn't it work for someone else?

Viktor snapped back to the present in a state of sudden possessiveness when you and Dimitri started to exit the rink and glided over to a bench. Viktor skated around the barricade and in your direction, gritting his teeth in unfamiliar anger when seeing Dimitri kneel down to untie your skates without noticing your already annoyed face.

"Dimitri," Viktor said firmly, causing Dimitri to jump up from his position.

"Yes?" he asked nervously.

"What do you think you're doing?" Viktor continued.

Dimitri put his hands up. "I was just going to untie her skates--"

"No, I mean the waltz jump. If you couldn't land a move as simple as that, you wouldn't be here, so why were you asking (Y/N) are help?"

Dimitri's arms fell to his side and he shrugged with a sudden smirk. "Yeah, okay, you caught me. It was worth a try."

"Excuse me?" you finally chimed in, leaning down to take off your skates.

Dimitri glanced at you with all traces of the young, shy newbie gone and replaced with a more cocky man.

"You're the hottest female skater in the game right now, and I don't mean the title. I thought that there's no harm in trying to get with you--"

Before Dimitri could finish, Viktor leapt forward and swung his fist into his jaw, knocking Dimitri on the ground with a loud thud. The other skaters, including Yakov, rushed over after witnessing the scene play out.

"What's going on?" Yakov demanded.

"The new guy isn't going to work out," Viktor concluded, making the final decision for everyone.

You casually slid off your skates and Viktor hoisted you off the bench to drag you as far away from Dimitri as possible. You, not expecting such a violent act from your boyfriend, just now processed what happened right in front of you.

"Viktor!" you exclaimed, tugging him to a stop.

"What?" Viktor grumbled, turning back toward you.

"Y--you just punched him! Why did you do that?" you questioned rapidly.

"He was hitting on you and you didn't notice!"

"Of course I noticed, but it's not like I was going to jump into bed with him!" you retorted. "You have women and men hanging off of you left and right and you don't see me losing my temper."

Viktor opened his mouth before closing it in realization that you're absolutely correct. Female skaters are always seen as more inspirational than sex symbols while men are the ones who get that type of attention.

"I'm sorry. I'm not... used to being so angry," Viktor admitted bashfully, now feeling extremely guilty for his hasty actions.

You let out a chuckle and raised your hands to cup his pale cheeks because that concerned demeanor Viktor gives off for others, especially you, always makes your heart skip a beat and all you wanted to do in this moment was show him you cared just as much.

"It's okay, Sweetheart. I think I like when you get jealous."

"Is that so?" Viktor flirted in his true nature, trailing his hands over your hips to rest on your backside.

You hummed and stood on your toes to connect your lips with his slightly chapped ones. Viktor pulled you into his body further and deepened the kiss as much as possible.

"Gross!"

You tilted your head back with a groan and looked over at the steely kitten with amusement.

"Viktor! You were helping me, remember!?" Yuri growled adorably.

"Of course, Yuri," Viktor responded cheerfully, letting you go, much to yours and his disappointment.

"Come on!" Yuri commanded, skating off.

"I love you," Viktor whispered and pecked your lips once more before departing.

"I love you, too."

You watched him help Yuri and realized that Viktor is insecure in many ways and you desperately promised to make sure he would always know he is the only person you ever want to skate with until you both inevitably hang up your blades and kiss the ice goodbye.
