Brother Like a Boyfriend

I wake up from my bed and remember today's a great day. Just like the past years, I always hang out with the girls on my birthday and I'm celebrating it again today. But it seems to be like a ritual as we always plan to celebrate it on the same day of the week, as well as the same place (either Pepenero or The Cheesecake Factory) and the same time (around eleven to twelve in the morning). We don't know why but it's always been perfect to be on that way.

I quickly grab my phone from the desk next to my bed to check any incoming messages from them. Oh. Damn! I receive 200 messages from them and missed two phone calls. I thought that I'm early enough to wake up today but yet they've been earlier than usual, though it's still nine o'clock. So I read them all, but one thing that gives me a plenty of surprise is the message from Jennifer. She wrote..

Hi Kelly! Can't wait to see you today :) Anyway, there's something very nice for you. I hope this delights you up. Jacob texted me last night and asked if we're going to hang out today, so I answered. But he didn't ask me other than that, maybe he has known our hang out time from someone else..

I immediately paused myself and begin to think, is there anything wrong between me and him; or even with my besties? Or maybe.. he wanna meet me to discuss a bit about our school organization's planning for the sports day (we are one of the heads of our school organization and of course, we're very much in charge of it). But a minute later, I remembered that I actually have a  crush on him since the school retreat and – probably he wanna date me later.. I even think deeper if this thing can really happen to me.

My mind just recalls everything happening on our last school retreat. Our school always holds the retreat the same for three grades (Grade 8–10). Back then on the retreat, we were in the same group and we loved to chat together, especially it's the best during the bonfire night on the second day. I know this sounds weird if he is two years older than me, but he's very nice and good-looking. He started talking to me first on the first day and somehow, we always chatted together the whole retreat till I have a crush on him till now. We got to know each other and oh, I remembered talking about my birthday to him. Okay, I finally understand it now..

And yes, after the retreat, it seemed that we always made an eye contact at school, but sadly it only lasted for a few days then he got his first girlfriend. It broke my heart a little though..

I glance at the time and stopped wondering. It's almost 10 o'clock and I'm still laying on the bed, I really need to get myself ready. I place my phone back on the desk and take my towel to have a bathe. While I'm walking to the bathroom which is in my room, my phone suddenly rings. My God, this must be either Jeniffer or Jesslyn! I can't get back, the time's rushing now! I purposely leave it and go straight to the bathroom. I take a bathe and dry my hair up. Then, disturbingly, a phone call comes up again. I decide to stop and pick it up instead. I find out it is Jeniffer who phones me.

Jeniffer :
Kelly, where were you?? I phoned you earlier, but you didn't pick it up.

Me :
I'm sorry, Jen! I'm literally in a big hurry, I've just finished shower and drying up my hair!

Jeniffer :
Haha, okay.. Anyway, where are we gonna hang out? Oh, I received a message from Jacob again. Gonna tell you later! You gotta hurry up, okay!

Me :
Oh, okay.. Hmm, just the Pepenero near the the mall. Be there at 11, okay, and don't forget to tell the girls, Jen!   Bye! :)

Jeniffer : Okay! Cya, Kel!

I end the call and throw myself into a white halter top with a pair of ripped-style hot pants. It's been my favourite costume recently, and somehow it always look perfect in any occasion when I'm with them. Then, I start make up and put on a simple choker with a lovely metallic triangle in the middle. I finish myself and grab my phone, then I walk down the stairs quickly with my lovely black bag behind.

I finished the stairs and rush to the shoe racks. I am getting my adidas superstar sneakers when my elder brother, Josh, comes to me.

Josh :
Hey, Kelly! Where are you going?

Me :
To the Pepenero as usual, Josh. It's my birthday, I'm hanging out with the girls.

Josh :
Oh, happy birthday, Cassie! Oh dear, I always forget your birthday, I'm sorry..

Me :
Kelly, not Cassie, Josh! Don't get my name mix with hers!

I smirk to him while wearing my shoes. He chuckles, but I know he's been having trouble with my name recently since he's got his gf whose name is Cassie. That makes me a bit jealous, but I know I'll find someone one day..

Josh :
Then, who's gonna drive you there?

Me :
Hmm, oh yeah! Shit. I even forget that. Umm, no – no one..

I mumbled and got myself speechless. My face immediately look glum and silent.

Josh :
Oh, you didn't order a taxi earlier? Are you in a hurry? I can give you a lift if you want.. Mum left the car in the garage for us today.

Me :
Yeah, I didn't.. Gotta accept your offer, but – you're not busy, right?

Josh :
No, that's okay, penny.

Yeah, penny's his favourite word to call me if he's correct. I smile and thank him, I know he would do this because we love to be together even since I was a toddler. Then we go into the car and he starts driving me to the Pepenero.

I know it's really nice of him, as a 20-year-old brother who is in university. Sometimes, I wish he could just be my boyfriend if it is allowed. I always wanna have a true boyfriend – that's always been my dream since I go to secondary, if only Jacob could be.. Even if he likes to trick me and yeah, torture me with his nasty faces, I still love him just as he loves me back as a sister. It even makes him look like my boyfriend when he drives the car. Yeah, he looks cool just in his way, and guess what – he's pretty much attractive too, haha :)

We turn on the radio and suddenly, my favourite song, All We Know, is playing on, so I start to sing. Josh turns to me and chuckles.

"Wow, you've got a great voice too."

"Haha, you've never heard me singing?" I raised my eyebrows and tuned my voice higher.

"Never, so arrogant of you, huh?" He smirks and chuckles again.

"Ughh, don't get my fingers on you, Josh!"

We seriously love to tickle each other when one is teasing the other. It's been a habit between us. As he starts teasing me, I'll try them out as well, haha..

"Well, well, well.. I believe Cassie can sing better like an angel right, Josh?"

He doesn't answer, but then chuckles after a while. I even start to tease him worse to see if he's strong enough to stand this.

"Your gorgeous girlfriend, Josh, perhaps the one you love most right now. Isn't she, isn't she??"

He almost laugh it out, but every time he wants to burst, he pretends as if he is racing the car, so he just shakes his head purposely to concentrate and continue driving.

"Shut up, Penny!"

I start to laugh and he joins me then. We even burst out louder when suddenly, he becomes serious again and speaks something that is  threatening me..

"Penny, stop it! I know this looks fun to you, but if you keep doing this, I'll do it the same to you one day.. One day when you've got a boyfriend."

I was shocked by his words so I decide to be silent after my mind reminds me about Jacob. I know Josh's a very good detective – especially that he's really capable of figuring out things like this.

Soon I arrive at the Pepenero and our car pulls over. I go out of the car after thanking him again and we give each other a smile to show peace after making such torturing teases.
