Jack

I finished unpacking my suitcase grumpily, not ready for enrollment in my school. I know, its a fresh start with new people in a new country, I should be excited! I just can't seem to crack a smile, knowing I'd left a beautiful lake that I had exclusively to myself back in Ireland.

The reason I moved to an odd place like America? Bullying. I know, I could've just moved cities, but my ma wanted to see America, so I came with her. I was being bullied after I told my "friends" about my ice skating hobby. They ended up telling everyone, and from then on, I never heard the end of it.

I couldn't escape it, and I knew it wouldn't stop.

"Sean, are you ready to enroll at your new school?" I turn and see Ma in my doorway, and I smile sweetly at her.

"Not really," I pause, looking at my white ice skates and sighing, "Ma, I'm gonna miss ice skating. I can't have anyone here find out. What if they don't like me, or make fun of my accent, or tease me for being small..." I trail off into thought, thinking about what anyone could possibly say about me, a gay Irishman that ice skates as a hobby, and plays videogames until I can barely keep my eyes open. I shudder, scared for the next day.

"Sean, it's going to be okay, you'll find someone to befriend, if not everyone! You're so outgoing!" My ma always knows what to say to me, because now I'm thinking optimistically, like I should. "Now, Sean, can we go enroll you now?" "Yeah Ma, I guess I'm ready to go back to hell." I earn a laugh from her in the car, and suddenly we're here.

The school is huge, definitely not a school from Ireland. I look in shock at the new atmosphere. It's a Monday, so students are walking around before class. I notice that unlike Ireland, these schools don't have a uniform, and then a cute boy catches my attention. I can see him through the glass of the... art room? He seems to be painting, and looking completely lost within it. I love seeing people so into what they love, it makes me happy.

"Sean, come on!" I pull my eyes away from the pretty boy, and look up ahead to the voice shouting at me to hurry. "Coming, Ma," I sort of say quietly. I don't need anyone knowing I have an Irish accent just yet.

When I glance back at the window, the pretty boy seems to be talking to his friends and smiling. Holy shit his smile is gorgeous. I smile to myself as I catch up and enter the building.

We approach the front desk and are directed to the principal's office.

"Good morning Mrs. McLoughlin, and you must be Sean! I'm Mr. Smith, the principal here. I wanted to introduce myself and say that our school is very open and accepting!" Yeah, right. "-LGBT+, and any other clubs you may be interested in!" They have an LGBT+ club, so at least I'll be accepted for that. "If you two would go see the counselor, she will give Sean his schedule for this year. I hope you have a great year here Sean, and if you have any issues at any time, don't hesitate to come to me!" I smiled and thanked him as Ma went to go search for the counselor's office. I turned to exit...

"Hey, Sean?"

"Sir?"

"If you seriously need anything, I'm here. If you would rather talk to a student, Mark Fischbach is apparently the best one there is. He's constantly in the art room, and he has a nice group of friends. Even though you're a shy boy, I feel like you'll fit right in with them."

The art room. Group of friends. Was his name Mark? I'll see tomorrow, when I officially enroll here.

"One last thing, Sean," he paused, smiling at me, "He will be showing you around. He's always the first to volunteer to show around new students like yourself."

"Thank you for letting me know, sir. If I need anything, I'll be sure to tell you."

These people are so much nicer than the schools in Ireland. They accept pretty much anyone here. I still can't let anyone know about my hobby, or my home.

I walk to the counselor's office and get my schedule, receiving more warm welcomes and smiles.

When we get home, all I can think about is the pretty boy in the art room, possibly Mark. Maybe I'll open up to him exclusively.

As soon as my alarm goes off the next morning, I jump out of my bed and scramble to the shower. I scrub for about 15 minutes, making sure I was absolutely clean.

After I get out, I towel dry my hair and get the clothes I picked out specifically for this day. My outfit consists of: a maroon long sleeve shirt with the sleeves pushed up, blue jeans, and maroon Vans. I spray my finest cologne on, and practically run to the bathroom. I brush my long hair on the top of my head that I dyed green for a dare, and actually liked the way it looked, so I kept it. I brushed my teeth twice to make sure they sparkled, and headed to the living room downstairs.

"Ready to go, Sean?"

"Of course!" I squeal as I grab my backpack and my new ID for school. I hear Ma laugh at my giddiness, and I can't help but radiate with joy.

I'm going to have fun this year, I just know it.
