Climbing up the stairs I walked quietly so I wouldn't wake up my parents.Slowly I reached for the door handle. I pushed the door open and a gush of cold fog came in. The fog was gray almost silver. I widen the door and the fog covered the entire landscape around me. It was almost as if the fog consumed the planet. And it basically did
People lived underground because anywhere they went there was fog. They rarely went outside for they couldn't see through the fog. Schools, homes, markets, life was under ground. In order to get to place to place there was automobiles that transported them through the fog. This transportation allowed the passenger to put in a location and the automobile could get the passenger there without them having to see where it took them.
My 4th grade science teacher once told me that the fog was here to protect us. She told the class that a long time ago humans hurt the plant by covering it in unnecessary gases. My teacher said that one day the humans all woke up in their different regions and saw that the planet was covered in fog. The planet used the fog to cure and stop the humans from hurt the plant any further.
Looking back I shut my door that poked out from underneath the ground. I put my head lamp on and set it to the lowest glow so that I could see through the fog. I reached into my backpack and retrieved my notebook that mapped out the neighborhood. I began walking, my feet crashing upon the metal ground. I passed the door with a glass window and the door with the 3 locks, the round door and the triangle door. I was getting closer to my destination.
Looking through the fog I saw a distant light. I approached with caution worried that the light was someone who wouldn't welcome me. With no place to hide behind I turned off my headlamp and tried to get as low as possible. I began to crawl to prevent my feet stomping on the metal ground to rat me out. I crawled towards the light and as I got closer I heard the person with the light whispering. As I got closer I noticed that the whisper was more
of a humm and I began to recognize the tune the person was singing.
Pulling in courage I whispered "Jason?"
My voice was followed by an unsettling silence. The hum stopped and the light that was once there went out. I heard shuffling.
"Malia is that you?" Jason called out a bit worried and afraid.
Letting out a sigh of relief I got up and turned back my light back on.
"Yeah it's me Jason!" I cried out.
HIs light suddenly came back one too. Hes was only a couple feet away from me. We began to walk towards each other and I finally faced a boy with shaggy dark hair. He had pale white skin and his eyes were a dark brown.
Jason is a boy I met in school. We became friends because no one else wanted to talk about story and fairy tales. Me and Jason had a love for imagination. And that's all we would talk about. We would sneak out of our underground house late at night and we would walk around the neighborhood telling stories. A lot of times we would have to cut our storytimes short because the Landguards would find us and take us back home.
Jason had a habit of humming a random tone whenever he became to bored. I asked him about it once and all he said was " I like to hum." I never really asked him anymore about it because the habit made me laugh.
One time Jason and I told a story about a creature that would live in water and it would have really slimy skin. We said that it would be able to travel through the water without having any legs like us. It would be able to have babies like Humans do but instead of having to have it in the mother's stomach all the time it could just have it in a little sac.
This was around the time that Jason's Mother was pregnant with his brother. He began to wonder what it would be like if we women didn't have to carry the babies in their stomach.
It was also around the time that I began to think about how wet the fog made our planet.
"I thought you were a Landguard !" I exclaimed.
"Me too,I got scared when I heard a voice." He responded.
"I was trying to call you. I heard you singing that song but i wasn't sure if it was you."
We giggled and began to walk. We walked in silence for a while and this is how it always was, we wouldn't talk until someone had a story to tell and when that story was done we wouldn't talk until another story came up.
Almost 30 minutes out in the fog and we were still walking in silence. I began to think about the fog and how much there was around our planet.
"What if.." i began.
"What if we lived on a different planet...And It hardly had fog?"
Jason looked at me and then added, "What if on that planet we could walk and go where ever, because we could see. The sun could always shine down on us."
"Yeah and the dirt that we cover up with the metal could be free."
"And because the dirt was free things could grow out of it." Jason introduced.
"Things that had lots of color and it would grow as a family"
"There could be big ones that could touch the sky"
"And really small ones that covered the whole entire ground and we didn't have to wear shoes. And we could let it grow as wild as it wanted." I said.
"And they can make wind but not the cold strong kind that the fog makes but warm soft kind."
"This Planet would be bright and colorful. It would be alive and loving."
"It would have creatures that all lived Aboveground and underground like us."
"They would all live together. Even the big creature would live together with the very little ones."
"Everyone could be equal."
"We wouldn't have to live under ground we could live above and play with the creatures."
"And we wouldn't have to build any houses because then we would be covering the dirt again."
"Yeah we live in the big things that grow and touch the sky, those could have a lot of room."
"That would be so cool." Jason stated.
"It would be so beautiful." I sighed
Jason and I went quiet again. Still thinking of the great planet. They both looked at the fog and wished that they lived in such a colorful world. They believed they would care for it. And they believed that it would care for them.
10 minutes passed and they still were thinking in silence.
"What if.." Jason said beginning his next imagination.
