Tonight was the last night in the dorms that me and Vivian shared before heading back to our homes for the holidays. She was planning to carpool into the night with a couple colleagues that I never met so it left me the slightest worry. She squeezed me tightly and let out a soft whimper "I'm going to miss you so much Jess, I hope you have a nice Christmas and New Years." Vivian was not only my roommate but one of my closest friends in college. We did everything together so we knew it'd be tough not seeing each other for a month. I tightened my grip "Same goes for you. And please, please, PLEASE don't drink on the road." I begged. We released to meet eyes, she grabbed her bags and headed for the door. "When I leave, look in the closet.. I got you something. And before you say anything; do not worry about the expenses. Happy holidays!" She quickly closed the door from behind grinning. If she stayed any longer she knew I would've argued how she didn't have to get me anything, especially since I didn't get her anything.
I walked towards the closet, sliding the door open slowly. I saw a Chanel logo on this tiny black box sitting on our tattered textbooks for our classes.
I bent down and quickly opened it, pulling out a shiny glass perfume bottle with a elegant designed cap, my eyes widened. I automatically knew she paid good money for it, so it was a must for me to get her something over the break. I reached for my phone and unlocked to check the time and a couple of notifications. It was getting late and my flight was 7 in the morning which meant I had to wake up around 5. I placed the perfume back into its case and packed it with the rest of my other stuff that has already been put away. I had so much on my mind; like if I should tell my family how I'm thinking of dropping out at the end of the semester and tell them what I always wanted to do or what I'll even say when I get there.
I fell asleep overthinking.
The alarm clock on my phone went off, dreading how much of a long day I had ahead of me. I got up to shower, then did some last minute packing and I was off. During the entire flight my phone was full of text messages from my mom, she was so worried of me being alone on an airplane. She hated it. When the plane was landing I called my mom to tell her I was taking Uber instead since the traffic looked horrible. I stepped out of the airport and seen The Uber there waiting with a sign of my last name "Hayes". He was scanning everywhere until he saw me waving, he started crumpling the sign as he walked towards me. He wore glasses and looked a bit over my age, he gave me a friendly smile and said "You can hop in, I'll be there in a second." He reached for my luggage and walked to the back of the car. I buckled in, looking through the interior mirror to watch him put away my things then he slammed the trunk shut. He came back around to the drivers seat and sat, he rustled his keys and asked "Is 223 Maple Way correct miss?" I looked up and popped the p "Yup." I answered. As soon as he started the car he went for the radio to break the awkward silence which prevented any conversation.
I liked this guys thinking.
I set my eyes out the window, the only good thing I liked about traffic was all the thinking I can do before reaching my destination. The more we passed familiar streets the more I got nervous. We arrived and he parked the car right in front of my house, "This is a lovely area.. let me help you with your things." He insisted. We got out. I took a deep breathe, I had no idea why I was like this. I looked at the garage way and noticed it was freshly shoveled, then I saw the door crack open with my moms head peaking out.
