Beep. Beep. Beep. Kaleo pulled the thin blanket tightly over her head and buried her face into the small, limp pillow that was on the floor. She grabbed her phone and clicked the snooze button. By the time the snooze alarm went off she had fallen back into a deep sleep. Beep. Beep. Beep. She groaned and grabbed her phone, clearly not ready to wake up but she was determined today was going to be her day.
She got up off of her makeshift bed and walked down the box-filled hallway in her plaid purple pajamas. The only one that seemed to be awake was her father, who was on the sofa watching the morning news. She scavenged the kitchen, finding some bread and a bunch of bananas hidden within all the moving boxes that were still yet to be unpacked. She settled with one of the bananas. Kaleo made the journey back to her room to get ready for school.
"Hey Kiddo," her dad, Liki said. "I can make some eggs for you and your brother before you guys leave. Speaking of which...Could you wake up Kona?"
"Morning dad," Kaleo responds blandly. "I don't care, I'm not that hungry. Kona will need breakfast though; I'm sure the first day of second grade will be rough," she chuckles to herself. Her dad gives her a half smile and gets up heading to the kitchen.
Kaleo walks down the hallway into the bedroom on the far left. She knocks on the door and then enters finding Kona already awake. He's dressed in clothes that don't quite match, orange cargo shorts and a grey and pink shirt. Kaleo shakes her head and picks him up.
"Kona, you know you can't go to school like this! You look silly," Kaleo smiles at him.
"Yes I can! I can go to school like this if you're going in your pajamas," he attempts to defend his case.
"I'm not going to school like this! Go tell daddy you need help getting ready for school, okay?" She sets him down and he runs out of his room. Kaleo goes to her room to dig through the boxes of clothes she has looking for the outfit she picked out for the first day. She smiles hearing Kona, "daddy, daddy, Leo says I need to wear something else!"
"Well she's not wrong," her dad states with a sort of smirk on his voice,"come with me, we'll go find you a nice outfit for school then brush your hair!" Kaleo was glad her father was stepping up to fill the shoes of Ani. Ani was Kaleo and Kona's mother; she died two years ago when Kaleo was 15 and Kona was 5.
"YES," Kaleo got excited, finding her clothes for the first day of senior year.
It took her 25 minutes to get dressed and do her makeup. She only applied eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. She liked her natural curly hair but didn't like her eyes. She felt the brown blended to much because her hair was also brown. She always had to make her eyes pop.
"It's about time you showed up for breakfast," Kona antagonized her playfully. Although, he was only a second grader he had a mouth as quick as a whip.
"Oh hush, I already ate my breakfast!"
"Well daddy made us eggs for our first day breakfast!"
"Kona, you can have mine but you need to hurry, we can't be late on the first day." Kaleo put the eggs on Kona's plate and his face lit up with excitement.
Not even ten minutes later Kona and I had our shoes about to leave.
"Wait," dad practically yells scrambling off of the couch. "You're mother would want a picture of this." Kaleo grabbed Kona pulling him close. "Say cheese," dad says trying to get Kona to look. Kona obligingly takes the orders.
"CHEESE!!"
Click. Click. Kona and Kaleo said goodbye to there father, each giving him a hug. They then left for their first day.
Kaleo dropped off Kona at the elementary school and was on her way to the high school right now. She parked her car in her designated spot, Row C, Space 4. She got out and made her way towards her new school.
She felt a shiver go down her spine as she opened the doors to the school, most likely from anxiousness. She was hit with a blast of chattering from students who hadn't seen each other in roughly two months.
"Excuse me... Where's the office," she asked multiple people. No one answered her. Great she thought, this year is going to go fabulously.. Not. "Excuse me...Where is the office?" Finally, a females' voice from behind her shouted.
"On your right, new girl!" Kaleo also heard rapidly approaching footsteps towards her. "Hi! Sorry I said new girl, I didn't know how else to get your attention. I'm Amanda!"
"Kaleo, it's alright, thanks for the advice," Kaleo responds. "I just needed to get my blocks."
Amanda laughed,"your what? Blocks?"
Kaleo shrugged,"yeah my blocks, like the paper that tells you where you are supposed to be and at what time."
Amanda smiled,"Here in Michigan we call that a schedule. You must be far away from home. Where are you from?"
"Hawaii. I really must be going, I need to get my 'schedule'," the words flicked off her tongue like nails on slate.
Amanda continued following her,"I can show you around the school and be your own personal tour guide!"
"That's very kind of you but I think I'd like to learn on my own." Amanda looked down appearing to be anguished. "I, uh, I mean, yes I would love to have a guide! This school looks huge."
Kaleo got her 'schedule' and showed Amanda. "All of our classes are the same except for lunch and gym," Amanda exclaimed.
Today, all of the blocks were pretty similar. The teachers introduced themselves to the class. The teachers asked how summer was. The teachers made us state our names or fun facts about ourselves. The teachers gave us papers to get signed by our parents. It was nothing like Hawaii and Kaleo wanted to go home.
