The real lesson

I am a mother,
I often preach,
My kids some lessons,
That life at times teach.

What if it happens, vice versa,
When my 3 year old,
Teaches me instead.

It happened so,
The other day,
Was to be his selection,
For the school's upcoming sports day.

I spoke to him,
Words of encouragement.
So that he may run fast,
To ensure that he gets,
Selected in the races at last.

I took his fancy to new heights,
As i took him to shop,
For new shoes to aid further,
In his smooth flight.

He was all merry and gay,
Flaunting his new purchase,
All through the way.

The next day, he woke up,
And was all set,
In his new shoes to
Conquer the world, rest.

I waited anxiously,
For his return.
Praying silently
Amidst daily chores.

Picking him up after school,
The usual hugs and kisses.
His innocent face makes a remark,
A beat my heart misses.

"Maa, the shoes didn't work,
They didn't run fast."
He spoke as I listened.
I thought to myself,
What hopes i has embeddened.

"Forgive me, my child
For my mistake.
To let you believe
In your shoes, more
Than yourself.

I forgot to tell you,
These shoes were only a means.
Your efforts and persistence,
Would ensure losses and wins.

No, don't stop believing in MAGIC,
It does exist.
Not in the wand but,
In the hand that holds it.
