Dean Winchester was a history professor at the University of Kansas. Castiel Novak was a fine arts professor at the same university. Their paths crossed often, especially since their new classroom assignments placed them across the hall from each other.
They would exchange casual conversation from time to time, with both men admitting that neither was happy about their students' wasted efforts when they had so much potential or that neither was married or had any children. It wasn't long before they considered each other the type of friends who ask each other for favors.
"Good morning, Mr. Novak! Boy, you don't see yourself today. Is everything okay?" asked Dean, concerned for his friend.
"Morning, Mr. Winchester. No, my car decided today was a great day to break down. As if the day of finals was a good time for that. I had my friend Charlie bring me in, but it took her out of her way and she wasn't happy." Castiel seemed aggravated. He had a downward look in his eyes, embarrassed to have to admit to his crappy car failing him.
"Well, hey man, if you need a ride I can bring you." Dean was concerned for his friend. He didn't like that he was stressed, and he wished he wasn't embarrassed to tell him what had happened.
"Mr. Winchester, that would be great, but I don't want you to go out of your way for me."
"Don't worry about it! Don't you live on Meadow Pike? It only takes me five minutes to get there from my house. Plus, I'd love to have some company for the thirty minute car ride!" Dean gave a smile and Castiel returned the gesture.
"Okay. Thank you, Mr. Winchester. I appreciate it." They agreed to meet after their class so Castiel could get a ride home, as well. Then they exited the hallway and entered their classes.
*Mr. Winchester's class*
"Everyone, the final will take ninety minutes. Use your time wisely. Turn it in when time is up. Please refrain from any loud noises so you do not disturb anyone around you. You may begin."
Everyone started reading the first question, and Mr. Winchester sat down at his desk in the front of the class. He was looking forward to the end of those minutes now not only because he could go home, but also because he would get to spend more time with Mr. Novak. He seemed like such a nice guy. Dean wasn't sure what to expect of him once he spent more time with him, but he was eager to find out.
*Mr. Novak's class*
"You have ninety minutes. Keep calm and stay focused. You may begin."
Castiel didn't want to be here. His day had been so bad. The only bright light near him was Mr. Winchester. Castiel wished he knew more about him, but he trusted him nonetheless. It felt reckless in a way, but what harm could a ride from a handsome friend cause?
