"Poe...?" I ask with a hint of sleepiness in my tone. I stare at the figure laying next to me. He flashes a bright smile as a glimpse of joy is seen in his eyes.
"Good morning, Fishface! How'd ya sleep?" His voice was loud and alarming. I sigh "What the hell do you think you're doing in my bed, half naked at that?"
"I just wanted to cuddle with my pineapple chuck before going to school. Is that such a crime?" I pinch the bridge of my nose as I sigh. I push him out of the bed and get up to get ready. As I grab my clothes and towel to take a shower, Poe wraps his arms around my waist and whispers in my ear, "It must be so lonely to take a shower all by yourself. I could join you, if that's what you want."
I give him a slight shove and with a slightly annoyed voice speak "Get dressed and go make breakfast for Ruby. And while you're at it, try not to burn it, okay?" The door closes behind me and I make my way to the bathroom. 'Why did he have to say that?' I try to shake my thoughts away as the water falls on me. He always plays jokes like this. But, it stopped being a joke for me awhile back. I don't even know why, it just... happened. I didn't even know I could love. But then again, I never knew what love felt like until he came along.
~flashback~
I was 11. Jumping from foster home to foster home had been a normal routine for me. You see, I wasn't really the nice type. I've always been very blunt and most of the kids that lived with me weren't very fond of that aspect and would often pick fights. It never really bugged me, but it bugged the caretakers enough to transfer me to another home.
This was my fifth transfer since I was first put into the foster system. I had just been told to wait in the waiting room as the caretakers got my room ready and got everything situated. The waiting room was surprisingly colorful for being in a foster home. The walls and floors were white, but the objects in the room were what made it colorful. All the tables and chairs were brightly colored and even though there were kids everywhere, the room still seemed to be neat and tidy.
The room seemed to be separated into neatly, organized areas. There was an area with a television, a computer, and other small electronic gaming systems. There was an area with toy boxes and doll houses with dolls and toys spewed out all on a bright red alphabet rug. There was an area with shelves of books and bean bag chairs of all the colors of the rainbow. But what really caught my were these three tables. 2 of them filled with children playing cards or playing a board game, but the center table had only one kid.
This kid seemed to be writing something. He seemed to be in his own little world. I stood there for a moment staring at the kid. He looked up and we made eye contact. After about 3 seconds his face turns a slight shade of red and goes back to writing. It was only for a couple of seconds but, it felt like an eternity. His eyes were an icy blue with a tint of sadness that was clearly able to see. He looked as if he'd been through so much.
My curiosity of the boy hit its peak. I sat across from him, attempting to see what he was writing. He looked up from his paper slightly and I ask him for a piece of paper and a pencil. He hesitates before nodding slightly and handing me what I had asked for. I started by drawing a circle and everything carried on from there. Whenever I draw, I never know what I draw until the end of the picture. It would seem as if my hand had a mind of its own. As if my hand knew exactly what I was thinking before I even thought of it.
About 30 minuets pass without any words being spoken. A caretaker comes up to me and ask me to go with them to show me my room. I grab the paper and get up. I start walking away when I hear the kid say "Wait!" I turn around to see his face. He seemed nervous. He stuttered out "W-what's your name?" I give a small smile and tell my name.
"It's Finn." His face lit up with joy as he replied. "Poe! M-my names Poe."
"See you around sometime, Poe." I smile and turn, following the caretaker to my room. The caretaker takes me to my room and let's me get settled in. Still holding the paper from before, I look down to notice what I had drawn. I collapse on the bed as a let out a slight chuckle. Of all the things I could've drawn, it had to be him.
~end of flashback ~
I walk down the stairs seeing Ruby and Poe making pancakes. Poe sees me and flashes a smile. 'God, his smile...' I help them make pancakes and set up the table. We start to eat and I notice the time. "Fuck, We're going to be late. Ruby, Poe, grab your stuff! Let's go!" Ruby, with half a pancake hanging from her mouth, grabs her stuff and goes to get in the car. Poe, who didn't even start eating, sighs and grabs his stuff and his plate and follows Ruby to the car. I pick up the plates quickly and grab my backpack, heading to the car.
