Sitting at the bar he chugs down his eighth beer of the night. He's on a mission. His own mission to block out the feelings.
He can still clearly see the images of that night. As if watching a movie he can still hear the windshields squeaking with every swipe as the rain poured down heavily. His right forearm resting on the arm rest between the black leather seats. Fingers intertwined with her ever so soft ones. She lay to the side of the car, head leaning against the window. He noticed the fog her slow breathing caused on the window. She could entice him with the simplest of things.
He closed his eyes for a moment. Dropping his head forward, he brings his hands to temples. Nothing like alcohol mixed in with a head ache. He keeps going though, because to him the pain isn't as bad as that which he has witnessed first hand. As his mind wanders back to what seems to be the only thing that preoccupies his thoughts so often, he orders another beer.
He thinks over and over again about every different outcome had he only kept his eyes on the road for one more second. Or if those teenagers hadn't have been out that night, but he can't bring himself to hate them no matter how hard he tries.
It's dark out as they head home from a weekend spent with her family. They tried to leave earlier before the rain came in, but lost track of time while in the company of family. Soft pop jams playing on the radio as they drive back home. He takes one more glance at her. A white knitted sweater, black leggings and hair fuzzed out all over the sweater.
He inhales sharply. The pain never seems to diminish.
As he watches her once so peaceful slumber he then watched everything become upside down. They have flipped over the side of the road, their bodies getting banged around in the process. "James!" He hears the frantic fear in her small voice.
That was the last thing he heard her say.
He frantically finds his seat belt and then fumbles to the other side of the car. Pain shoots though his side and up his leg, but he keeps pushing through the mud. Taking her out, he lays her on the ground and holds her body close to his. Blood drips from her lip. Weakly she raises her hand to his face, and he looks at her. Looks into her eyes to only see love and fear. They knew. He kisses her forehead, cheek and nose. He rubs his hand up and down her arm like any normal situation. She sighs heavily and closes her eyes, leaning into his arms.
