A harsh breeze whistled through the barren oak trees, making a tiny gray tom's ears twitch in irritation. It was the dead of night, and his eyes began to become heavy, but he had to remain awake until sunrise. He tried to keep his mind occupied by gazing into the stars, but the sky was dark and cloudy. As he stared into the empty night, wishing that the clouds would all just blow away so he see into space, a sudden voice jolted him back to reality.
"She's gone".
The tom spun around quickly, nearly jumping out of his skin. To his relief, he saw a familiar figure looming over him. He cocked his head to the side awkwardly, to show his confusion in the most exaggerated way possible without speaking. He knew it was strictly forbidden to speak. However, to his dismay the figure continued staring at him intently, expecting an answer. So he reluctantly gave him one, trying to be as quiet as possible.
"Excuse me? Who?".
"Your mother", the voice rasped quietly.
The gray tom's eyes widened in surprise. His fur started bristling, and his eyes started looking back and forth frantically, making sure no cat was around to see him talk during his vigil. He needed answers, and quick. It would be the only thing that would cure his racing mind and his fast beating heart.
"W-what do you mean gone?", he squeaked out, "Ratfur, please tell me she's okay!". His voice had risen slightly, making Ratfur shush him with his ragged tail. A look of concern spread across the gray tom's face, despite Ratfur looking surprisingly calm. He just blinked and smiled warmly. This didn't help the gray tom's obvious concern.
"Of course she's fine! She just had to leave for a bit", Ratfur murmured softly. This only made the tiny gray further confused, although relieved. In the back of his mind he was still questioning him though. After all, Ratfur was a pretty ancient elder, he could've just lost his marbles.
"But...why exactly?", the gray tom whispered, eyes narrowed with doubt.
"Foxes".
And just with that, Ratfur scurried off, leaving the tom to a cold and dreary night to worry alone.
