I walked through the forests of Bootford, humming a song I knew well. As I walked, I thought I could hear footsteps behind me, but I dismissed it as paranoia.
At one point, I heard a branch snap behind me and I whirled 180 degrees, sending my duffelbag careening into my crotch.
I doubled over, whimpering as I pretended to feel intensive pain. I was actually fine, but I wanted to complete the illusion.
I heard laughter somewhere behind me and I stood up, looking around. Nobody was readily visible, but I stayed alert. 'Cod dammit, just fucking pop out already,' I thought. 'If you're gonna kill me, just do it.'
"Hello there," I heard an unfamiliar voice behind me. I squeaked loudly and turned around, pulling my knife out of my pocket.
I had no idea what the... person standing in front of me was. It had fur and a round, snoutless face. On either side of its mouth were sharp, jointed mandibles, about the length of a finger each. It had earlike flaps on the places where a cat's ears would be, and its eyes had vertical slit pupils. It had talons on its hands and simple paws for feet. Its tail was long and tapering. The strangest thing I noticed was a pair of limbs on its back. The limbs looked like bat wings, but without webbing and with the "fingers" partially fused together.
I couldn't stop staring, that is, until the creature said, "Like what you see?" I blinked and shook my head, slightly startled by the flirtatious nature of the question.
"Err, uhh..." I finally choked out a response. I was thoroughly confused; I had never even thought a thing like this could exist.
"I guess I've really got you speechless, huh." The creature's mandibles moved and pulled at its lips as it spoke.
"Can you stop... doing that with your... mouth-finger-thingies?"
"Why? Does it... Unnerve you?" The creature intensified its mandible motions, grinning at my disturbed face.
"Eeuuuuuuughhh..." I groaned, turning away. The creature laughed a little, following me as I headed home.
"Quit following me," I sighed.
"No," it replied.
"Why not?"
"Cuz I heard you could help me with my problem."
"What problem?"
"As you may have noticed, I'm not from here. I need a way to get back to my dimension. And you're the only one that could help me."
