prologue

the little boy's wet hair fell short against his forehead as his mother blow dried it out. in his mouth sat a grape-flavored tootsie pop, the stick resting between his plump lips. he smiled, as his mother shook his head around to get all the angles of his head with the blow dryer.

"mommy?" he said, when she turned off the dryer. she looked at him in the mirror, humming in response. "when will i get to see what color everything is?" he asked and his mom stopped rummaging through the drawer, looking for the comb.

"not for a while, bud." she let out a sigh and kneeled next to him. "color is a broad word. you can see color. like, the white table top, that's color." she said softly, knowing full well it wasn't color.

"it's not a pretty color." he took the grape lollipop out of his mouth, looking at it. "i want to see what color this is. it tastes like a red." he giggled. "miss montgomery taught us the color words." he looked back up at his mom.

"tyler, i can assure you that you will see color soon. color shows up when you hold the hand of your true love." she explained, finding the comb in the messy drawer.

"ew. love is gross. and girls have cooties." he stuck the lollipop back in his mouth.

"yeah, they do, don't they?" she replied to him, combing his hair back. "go get your nice clothes on, we're leaving soon." she put the brush down and he got up, taking the lollipop out of his mouth.

"mommy, i bet i can guess what color everything is! my lollipop is red, your hair is orange, and my bedsheets are blue! oh, and my church shoes are purple." he cheered happily, running out of his parents' bedroom, his mom following and listening with a smile on her face.
