The board has the alphabets A-Z, Numbers from 0-9, words yes, no, hello and goodbye. It could also contain various symbols. The small heart shaped piece is called the planchette.
The participants place their fingers on the planchette and ask the board questions.
This is for the spirits to contact the living. You ask the board "is there any spirits willing to contact us?" You make sure you don't press down too hard on the planchette as it moves to answer. If the spirit ignores a question you say "ignoring all questions" and ask again.
