Oli was reluctant to go to school, she was reluctant to get out of bed. She just lay under the cover and shut her eyes, hoping there would be a reason for delay, or canceled school. Her mother called from downstairs for Oli, and the smell of oatmeal drifted into her room, that got Oli up. She picked up a simple, black shirt that was laying on her bed post. She sniffed it and shrugged, "Doesn't smell bad." She slipped it on after taking off her pajama shirt, and looked in her drawers for a pair of pants. She found some jeans and put those on, grabbed her backpack, phone, and headphones, and slowly walked down the stairs.

"There you are! Thought you were never going to get up!" Oli's mom said, obviously quite flustered, she was dressed and ready to go to work, a stray curl hung loose. She pointed to a bowl that sat on the dark pine wood table that was tucked in the corner of their kitchen, "Olive, grab the bowl and get in the car, you missed the bus, so now I have to take you to school, I'm going to be late for work!" She grabbed her car keys, grabbed her purse and briefcase, and rushed out. Oli sighed and grabbed the bowl, she flipped the switch and walked out the door.

"I like to be called Oli mom." Oli said as she buckled her seatbelt, she glanced out the window.

"Well you are my child, and I named you Olive, so I can call you what I may." Oli's mom said, not looking at Oli. Oli sighed as she leaned on the window of the car. She found her way to her locker after being dropped off, and set her backpack inside and unpacked her stuff. She walked to class silently, not a person by her side chatting with her. Wonder where Lexi is, Oli thought.

Oli settled into her desk and filled out her agenda and got out her homework. She glanced up to see Lexi run in, just in time, right before the bell rang. Lexi sat down in her seat next to Oli, a lock of her blond hair hung askew, she blew out a breath of air, "Made it!" She smiled.

"Hope we'll make it through another week of school." Oli sighed. She opened her math textbook and set her pencil down. Lexi pulled out a roughly treated homework sheet and set it down, her pencil poised in her hand. It was a normal day in school, everything exactly as it had been the day before, a constant cycle.
Oli walked beside Lexi, both walking home from school together. "So what do you think about about Henry? Think he likes me?" Lexi giggled, her cheeks bright red.

"Henry? Like a weirdo like you? Don't think so!" Oli laughed, Lexi did too. The laughter ended soon though, because Lexi was suddenly thrown back, like an invisible force had shoved her. Lexi had begun to walk at a faster pace and was a bit ahead of Oli, but Oli was soon thrown back as well. She felt as if she were being crushed by a skyscraper, her eyes closed shut in the force. He landed in the hard road, her head hitting first. The ground shook and a rumble echoed around her, she had never been through an earthquake. She heard a scream, despite the ringing in her ears, but she was capable of nothing else.

"Oli! Oli! Olive!!!" A blurry face loomed overhead, and the voice sounded a thousand miles away. Oli blinked a few times and the face came info focus, it was Lexi. Lexi had a gash on her left arm and several cuts all over, she had a scared look on her face. Oli slowly rose to a sitting position, "I survived an earthquake." Oli marveled.

"I don't think that was an earthquake..." Lexi said, she looked around, the road was cracked, cars turned over like toys, several buildings and houses collapsed, and people picking themselves up and gathering, anxious and fearful talk spread among them.

"Then lets go find out what the heck that was." Oli said, she reached her hand out for help up, and Lexi offered her hand for Oli to grab. Soon they were on their feet, and in the group of people.

Among all the nervous, scared chatter, a voice rung out above the rest, "We have to stay calm, that earthquake is probably the biggest we've experienced. We have to see if anyone has been trapped in any of the collapsed buildings!" It was Mr. Chaperone, he was always the one to take charge, and Oli would know. She looked over the crowd of people towards the neighborhoods, she noticed many houses had collapsed, the broken wood frames, insulation, wires, and roofs rising up in a messy heap.

"Maybe we should check there first?" Oli said, pointing. Mr. Chaperone, looked over and he ushered all of us to come, "By golly!" He said, already halfway there Oli and Lexi were hesitant to go, they were already late getting home, and they wondered if their houses where nothing but mesh as well.

Lexi

looked at the remains, then towards the direction of their house's. She turned to leave, but Oli grabbed her arm, "If there was a baby there, would you leave? So let's go and see if there are any survivors." She ran off towards the ruins, Lexi sighed and slowly followed. The rest had already arrived, Mr. Chaperon handed out orders, dividing the group into separate search and rescue parties. Oli and Lexi were put into a group with Zack, the 14 year-old boy they both despised.

They headed towards their assigned spot, the farthest from the rest. Zack eyed them, "Look whose in my team," He nudged Oli, "Guess you couldn't stay away from me, huh?" Oli tried not to give him a good suckerpunch, and kept walking, eyes fixed ahead. It actually took longer than expected to reach "Cherry street", but the sign read; "Cherry Rd."

"Huh." Lexi said, really not caring about anything, her stomach had a grip of her, not her mind. Oli saw a house that was up in flames, "Hurry, we should check that first!" She shouted over her shoulder, already running. Zach followed, Lexi stayed put. She looked at the house, then she realized, the house was all alone, "Wait!" she screeched, now she ran, and she grabbed Oli's hood just in time.

Oli's left foot hung suspended in the air, "AHH!" she squealed, though she was safe. Lexi panted and yanked Oli back, "That, was very close."

"Too close." Oli panted. Zack skidded to a halt, "Where did this come from?!?" He said in astonishment, "This wasn't he-" He was cut off by a crack, and in the next instant he was gone. A horrible, very unmanly scream ran out, Oli and Lexi both ran to the edge and looked down, Zach fell down the cliff, then disappeared into the furious waves of...the ocean? His head resurfaced, and he screamed out for help, but another wave was upon him, and he was thrown into the cliff. A horrible scream and then blood stained the frothy waves.

"He's gone." Oli breathed.
