The bell rang and everyone gathered in their seats as Mr. Collins walked in.
“Good morning class, please take out the homework from last night.” Some students groaned, signaling they didn’t do it. I continued to stay still in my window seat as a few fished through their book bags to find the crumpled assignment; others scribbling down some crap answers just to say it was done. Me? I’m already done with the assignment since I had finished it in the last five minutes of class and turned in right as the bell rung. It’s not that I’m a goody-two-shoes or anything, it’s just that I’m just smart. I’m not saying I’m like Albert Einstein because no one is like Albert Einstein but himself. I just know what I’m doing. After the homework was turned in, Mr. Collins started his usual boring lesson. I pushed my thick rimmed glasses back up on my nose and stared out the window, not really interested in today’s lesson. Hey, just because I’m good at it doesn’t mean I like it. Forty minutes later the bell rung and everyone scrambled to make it out of the room. I sighed as I trudged down the hallway, getting a few shoves here and there from people hurrying to get to their next class. Ah, history. My least favorite class. Now, I love the subject since it’s not that hard; I just hate this class. The reason? Kale Park. Captain of the football team, conceited, total jerk, but also totally cute. No one knows, but I’ve liked Kale for a while now. Yeah, it’s classical that you like the boy that picks on you but, besides that he’s funny and cute. I know it’s stupid but it’s true. Girls dream about dating him and guys envy him for it. Anyway, I sit next to Kale in history, and he always makes fun of me. Why? I have no clue. It all just started one day and it never stopped… The bell rung as Kale took his seat, his pearly whites showing themselves.
“How’s my favorite nerd today?” His deep voice asked, making me roll my eyes.
“Fine. Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask you. Do you still have that rash? I heard it was pretty bad.” I smirked as his eyes widened. About a month and a half ago word got around that Kale had this horrible rash that wouldn’t go away. He might be popular but it still haunts him today.
“Hey! You better watch yourself Charlie. And besides, it got better.” He spoke, crossing his arms over his chest with a satisfied smirk planted on his face. I scoffed and turned my attention to the board that read we were taking notes on the Korean War.
“Hey, we’re talking about your people!” I exclaimed as he rolled his eyes. I’m not lying! Kale moved here from Korea in the third grade. And, I’m not racist either, thank you very much.
“Thanks for stating the obvious.” He whispered as I laughed, making him glare at me. He soon turned his head back to the board as I followed, but I found myself staring at him out of the corner of my eye. His brown eyes sparkled as he focused on the notes, his tan skin seemed to glow, and his raven black hair always looked perfect, even when he was going for the lazy look. He cleared his throat, making me snap out of my thoughts.
“Why don’t you just admit you like me Charlie? It’s okay, a lot of girls do.” I felt the heat rush to my cheeks as I quickly looked away.
“Don’t be stupid, Kale. I don’t like you and I never will.” I stated as he chuckled as Mr. Williams cleared his throat.
“Okay, we’re going to be doing a project on a war of your choice. You will get partners, but I get to choose.” Everyone groaned, including Kale, making me sigh. It didn’t really matter to me who I got put with, I’ll do it all and they won’t do anything.
“Kale and Lisa. Charlie and Jason…” Huh, I guess it won’t be so bad. Jason’s pretty cool. I noticed Kale tense up next to me, but knew it was because he got stuck with Lisa. She’s the cheerleading captain and has the biggest crush on Kale, as you can tell, Kale doesn’t feel the same way. We started to get with our partners as I waited patiently for Jason. Finally someone sat next to me, but it wasn’t Jason. “Kale? What are you doing?” I asked as he smiled.
“Jason said that he wanted to work with Lisa instead so we switched partners.” I groaned, throwing my hands up in the air. Just my luck…
“So, what war do you want to do?” He asked as I turned to look at him.
“Look, I always do everything in group projects so I’m going to get started.” I stated as his expression showed he was shocked at my tone.
“Then what do you expect me to do?” He asked as I shrugged.
“Just sit there and look pretty or something.” I suggested as he rolled his eyes and sat there the whole time.
