We were all born with it. That stupid little gray stone in our wrist. Some had it on their left, others on their right. It usually depended on the person. Mine? Mines on my right wrist. A dull, gloomy rock shade with no pretty colors whatsoever. It's one of the things that I despise the most. What's the point of it?
Well, the point of these little stones is to mark who our soulmate is. It lights up a certain color when you're around them. It glows, illuminates. In fact, it happens to be quite a big deal when it does. People sometimes clap or "oo" and "aa" when they see someone else's stone light up. But not me, I'd rather not get into other people's business. It made no sense to go busting into someone's life when you didn't know who they were or if they even knew who their soulmate was. Sometimes it would happen right in the middle of the street surrounded by people. If the other person didn't realize who their soulmate truly is, or if they were stupid enough to not even look at their wrist, it would go unnoticed.
And maybe that person who saw their stone light up would never find out who their soulmate was.
It would be angering at times and it certainly bugged me half the time.
I guess I never introduced myself. My name is Sage. Sage Ryder, to be exact. If you wish to know my middle name, well you'll find out later. My friend Kasey will probably shout it out if she's mad at me or something. Honestly, she's an unpredictable ball of sunshine.
So, I go to a school called North River High. I mean, in all honesty, it's a pretty nice school. That is if you get past all the cliques without getting torn apart. It's like a jungle out there, scary and horrible. People are rude, people are snooty if you're not like them. The jocks, you had to be good at sports. The art kids? You had to be a great artist to even have them consider you being in their little group. The preppies? Oh, I wouldn't even mess with them. However, the one group that really stands out for being brats, are the pops. Or that's what they call themselves. I think it's horribly idiotic. What kind of name is that?
I usually roll with my friend Kasey. We'll sit at lunch tables by ourselves and have a good time. We're not those people who need a group. Especially Kasey. She's a special girl to me.
When Kasey was young, her father died from a heart attack. She was around twelve when that happened. It struck her hard since she had a very close relationship with her father. However, after her father's death, her mother started up drugs. Yeah, she became a druggie. That put Kasey in a really bad spot with her mother. They were running out of money since Kasey's mother, Julie, was using the money to buy the drugs she wanted. It was hurting Julie more than it was hurting Kasey. For a while, she didn't tell me about it at all. Like she didn't want me worrying about her. Eventually, I found out, and that resulted in a lot of hugs and crying from the both of us. Partially an argument over why she hadn't told me, but it went back to the worrying thing. I eventually calmed down and told her everything was going to be okay. We both told my parents, and Kasey's mother started her rehab. It was a rough process for Julie, but she began to show signs of improvement. This made Kasey feel a bit better, along with myself. We were young, but we knew a lot already. This was what partially bonded our friendship.
But, to the present. I spoke about the cliques and such in my school, but that's simply an understatement. The main people who seem to bother me, are the pops. Their lead by the main "king and queen", Valor Michel and Macy Jameson. Oh man, they were just annoying as hell. What irked me the most is that they acted like they were the biggest deal on campus. Valor, he was a jock, but a smart guy. We butted heads quite a bit in class debates, but usually, we didn't speak. Unless it was teasing and bullying.
Macy, she made it her business to get into everyone else's business. A total drama queen, a total hypocrite. She was the one I hated. Valor, I could stand for a little. His partner in crime, no way. She was way too dramatic for me to even stand.
I guess that's how it is in most schools. But nothing could prepare me for the moments that lay ahead of me.
