“You watched slaves being sold?” There was a tinge of horror in her voice as she spoke up, if that’s the only thing she was to be concerned about in his tale then she is more ill-suited to this life then I originally assumed. There was a moment of silence.

“Sorry, continue.”

“He was something new in the parts, dressed in the finest clothes that shone with gold and made of bright colours. That was the best haul I ever got, though he didn’t buy anything I managed to pickpocket his purse from him, which is a scary thought since, unknown to me at the time, the man was a Vampire and the last thing you want to do is steal from one.” Every time I heard his story, his skill still amazed me, true the newcomer was probably unprepared and exhausted but stealing from ones such us me is very much unheard of.

“I left the port after that, not safe to linger round where you stole, but later that evening that very same man found me lingering on the outskirts of town, trying to pawn off what I stole that day to the town merchants… Lets just say the results weren’t pretty.”  A short pause before he continued.

“Turns out that after he left me dying in the street, with a couple of limbs from the merchant I was selling to, he didn’t turn me fully since he hadn’t managed to recover from his journey when he came after me.”

“What do you mean, didn’t turn fully? I thought it was…. Never mind.”  I could imagine him grinning at this.

“I take it you don’t remember fully yet then? Ok, this would have came up later rather than sooner but oh well, to turn a human a Vampire must share enough blood with it to keep it alive long enough for the venom to bind the blood and the body together, yes we have venom per say, whereas the old blood must be drained for the new one to take over.”  Probably not the best time to tell an insecure fledgling, though I doubt that without assistance she would be able to turn humans at will.

“So when you were turned, what happened?”  He sighed, probably still continuing with his work as she observed and listened to his story.

“To put it simply, I didn’t get enough of his blood and was stuck somewhere between human and Vampire. A vulnerable body with a thirst for blood, about 20 people died within the space of a week or two, it was kinda hard to tell at the time, before Leon found me.” Ah yes, I remember the moment I finally found him, half crazed and covered in blood, standing over yet another butchered body. To tell the truth ever since the moment I found Joshua he has been intriguing in that no apparent damage has come from his forceful transition over such a long time span, a case I have yet to find reoccurring.

“So what, he found you and finished off your change?” I chuckled, definitely not a clue, I couldn’t decide if that was good or bad in that we have yet to be found out by the human population but bad that once they are incidentally turned they are doomed to have very limited life spans, even shorter than their human one would have probably been.

“Don’t you know how blood types work? If he would have given me any of his blood directly that would have certainly killed me since, especially back then, there was no way to find out if the blood types are compatible.”

“So what did he do?” she was clearly exasperated by the whole flood of new information.

“He knocked me out, quite well in fact, and tracked the vampire that bit me. A couple of days later well, lets just say I had all the blood I needed and finished the change. So, here I am!” there was a long exhale before she spoke.

“Wow, that’s a lot different than what happened to me. What else happened to people round here?”  With a shuffle and bang I assumed he finished his work on the fountain before answering.
