Julie opens the door and almost gets knocked over when all four of her children come barreling past her. My mother reaches to help steady her, and then they both begin to laugh.
Jack grabs my hand as he's running past. He looks back over his shoulder never slowing his pace. " Come on Abby lets go jump on the trampoline."
I began to laugh. Jack is always the first one to come running for me. "Jack slow down. I can't keep up."
Casey is the first one to make it to the trampoline, then Mack, then Layla. Jack stops beside the trampoline and waits for Ally to catch up. He then helps her up then he grabs me and helps me up before climbing up behind me. We're all squealing and jumping.
Jack starts jumping higher and higher. " Look Abby what I can do". And right there I see the greatest thing in my life. He jumps one last time and he then does a back flip. " I bet you can't do one."
I begin jumping trying to jump as high as he does. One jump. Two jumps. Three jumps. I can't let him beat me. I will show him I can do anything he can do. I'm scared, I am not going to let that stop me. Four jumps and I am up in the air. I twist my body the way I seen Jack do it. I am upside down. The next thing I know my head hits the black mat and I feel the searing pain go through my neck. I begin to cry and I feel gentle hands reach under me and I can feel I am in someone's lap. I cry harder. I feel soft lips kiss my cheek. And I know Jack is holding me. "Shhhh baby girl it's ok, I have you. I am so sorry. I shouldn't have let you to do that."
I can feel the tears running down my cheeks. I can't stand to hear him in pain. I look up and he's looking down at me. His eyes are glistening. He runs his hands through his auburn hair. He then reaches down and wipes the tears from my eyes.
Chapter 1
The Text
*10 years later*
*Abby*
Georgia History 101. I love this class. This is my favorite class. Yet I still can't hold my eyes open. I was up all night listening to my mom and stepdad fighting. This is my new normal. It's a never ending cycle.
(*Memory)
> *My stepdad Timmy come in again drunk after his latest disappearing act. This time was the longest he has ever stayed gone. Two weeks. It was quiet around the house, I should have been happy for his absence but my mom cried non stop. And when she wasn't crying she walked around like a zombie with this far off look in her eyes. She would sit at the kitchen table and stare out the window looking into the back yard for hours. *
*
* He walked in the front door, he threw his jacket over the couch arm, then he stumbled to the kitchen. He reeked of alcohol. I watched him as he went to bend and give my mom a kiss on the head. She pulled away from him with a look of disgust on her face. He then stumbled back from the quick jerk of my mothers arm and fell to the ground.*
*He tried to stand up and each time falling backwards onto the floor. My mother takes pity on him (big mistake) and offers her hand to help him to his feet. "Come on honey let me help you to bed." With a I am dong I charge at him like a raging bull. We both go tumbling down to the floor. "Don't you ever touch my mother again you drunk piece of shit." His arms are flailing all around as he's trying to find anything to grab onto. *
* I can hear my mother pleading for us to quit. I feel my hair being ripped from my head. I try to pull away only to fall back onto my back*.
The bell jerks me back to class. I look over at my best friend Rachel in time to see her boyfriend Trevor pulling her to him, nuzzling her neck.
I love Rachel with all my heart, but Trevor on the other hand is a complete douche bag. He cheats, he lies, and he is always making Rachel feel like shit about herself. She "loves" him through it all. Every time he lies it's because she doesn't understand him enough. She believes it's because she lacked somewhere.
