Unhinged
Prologue
Mama I want to go play with Layla, Jack, and Mack. Please Mama can we go?" I loved being able to see Jack.
I don't remember our first meeting. I just know that Jack has always been there. Our parents were close friends. It was his Stepdad Rick, his mom Julie, his older brother Casey, his twin brother Mack, and their baby sister Layla. Jack and Mack are identical twins. But everyone who knows them could tell them apart. They look alike but their personalities are polar opposites, the way they hold there mouths when deep in thought is completely different. Layla is the only girl of the bunch. They lived four houses up the street from us. So yes Jack has always been there. He is four years older than me. He has always protected me, hugged me when I'm sad, and scolded me when I was doing wrong. If I ever had a brother I imagine he would be just like Jack.
And in my house there is my dad Jason, my mom Kathy, my sister Ally and me. Ally is two years younger than me. I only have one sister. I wonder sometimes what it would be like to have so many brothers and sisters. To have that big family that Jack has.
"Honey not right now, I have to finish ironing your dads shirts. She looks down at me with that sweet smile only moms can give their little girls.
"Mama please". I beg, I know now when I see that smile I am going to get my way, so my begging gets a little more frantic. The anticipation is building up in my chest. I know now that I am definitely getting my way when I see my mother reach over and unplug the iron. She then walks over to the phone and I see her dial numbers. I watch her twiddle the cord between her long narrow fingers as she waits for an answer. "Hey Julie, are you busy? Abby wants to come play with the kids?"
I watch her wait and then I see her beautiful smile and hear her hearty laugh. I don't know what Julie is saying on the other end, but my mother thinks it's funny.
I run up and look up at her and start tugging on her bright white shirt. "Mama, Mama did she say yes? Can we go Mama?"
Mama holds her finger up signaling me to stop and wait. I stand there impatiently. But I wait.I begin to jump up and down. I can't stand the waiting.
She laughs again. "Ok we will see you in a few." Mama hangs up the phone and looks at me. "Abbigail Diane Henson. You are seven years old, you are plenty big enough to wait patiently while I am on the phone."
"Yes Ma'am" I don't understand why she's being so harsh with me. I only want to go play with my friends.
She looks at me and smiles, she then crooks her finger signaling me to come over to her. I walk over still feeling the sting of her stern stare.
She squats down in front of me. I'm looking down at my fingers that I am now twiddling. I feel her hand gently grab my chin and lift my face to hers. She's got that gentle mom smile on her face. And she leans in and kisses me on my forehead. "What am I going to do with you Abby? Always the impatient one. But you're still my sunshine."
"Go get your socks and shoes on. And I'll go get Ally ready."
I jump up and start to run for the hall and go into my room to put my socks and shoes on. I can hear my mother giggle all the way down the hall.
My mother my sister Ally and myself stand out front of the Deans home. The Deans have a large white two story house, with a porch that wraps around half of the house. They have marble steps going up the front of the house. My mother rings the door bell. I can hear the laughter and excitement on the other side of the door, and I begin to feel the excitement build up in my chest.
