"Sorry, I didn't see you..."
"You okay? Are you crying?"
She looked at the boy she ran into, tears fogging up her glasses before running down her cheeks.
"I'm fine, Danny, don't worry."
"He said no, didn't he?"
She nodded, and he pulled her in close.
"Don't worry about him. Bret's just an asshole. A good looking, popular, asshole, but still..."
He sighed as she sobbed into his chest.
"Ava, look at me."
As she looked up, he wiped the tears from her face.
"You're better than him. You're better than him. You're better than him."
"Really?" Her nose started to run.
"Of course. Now can we go clean you up? Your nose is about to drip on me."
"Sure." The corners of her mouth briefly lifted, almost a slight smile.
