I live in the old mall because it was still mostly intact and there was food, clothing, and furniture. I tended to stay in only one or two stores so I don't eat my entire food supply. Because of that, there could be ten other people living in the mall, (Or what I like to call it, home) and I wouldn't know it.

I had been living here for three months when I started to feel like someone was watching me, stalking me even. So one night I put a mannequin in my bed and waited to see if someone was watching me or if I would hear anything.

My superstitions were correct. I saw a seventeen-year-old boy silently gawk at my bed, when he realized it was a fake he turned around and yelled my name.

"Amelia! Where are you!"

How did he know my name? That's when I realized I knew that voice! It was Kevin, my old best friend. We stopped being friends when I caught him trying to spike my water bottle with  some fake emotions.

"Kevin!" I yell angrily. Why was he watching me? How is he not dead, or crazy? How did he even find me? I am miles away from our old town. Questions whirled around in my head.

"Hi Amelia." Kevin said awkwardly. "I didn't realize you were awake."

"Obviously" I say sarcastically. "What are you doing here? And why exactly where you watching me sleep?"

I watched him squirm. "I just wanted to check on you." He says shrinking down.

"Oh, you wanted to check if I had gone crazy! Crazy because you tried to spike my water with that poison!" I finish with a huff of anger.

"No, because I still think of you as a friend." He says so quietly it's almost a whisper.

"Then why did you try to poison me." I say puffing out my chest.

"Don't you remember that day?" He says taking a few steps forward and then siting on my bed.

I join him. Then say quietly "I try to forget it."

"That was the day the school announced that we were at war. And the officers stormed the school taking or shooting anyone that didn't use the bottled feelings."

"Poison" I add.

He takes a deep breath then continued, "I wanted to spike your drink to protect you."

I am taken aback. "Then why didn't you try to tell anyone." I say in a shaky voice. I hated this memory.

"I tried, but the office didn't believe me. And by the time I saw them coming it was too late. And I just wanted to protect my best friend."

I then do something completely out of character for me, I hugged him. I hug my best friend who I haven't hugged or even seen for months. "I'm sorry." I whisper into his shoulder.

"I'm sorry too." He says back.

Afterrealizing that we had strength in numbers, we teamed up to stop human kind fromdropping off the face of the earth. Why did we put this task on ourselves?Probably because we are crazy seventeen-year-olds. Or because we are stupid. Probably both.
