I sighed. I was in the car, boxes and bags piled around me, still an hour away from our new house. I'm Jay by the way. My mom is driving us to meet my dad at our new house. All of a sudden the car sputtered to a stop. Great, it just broke down. My mom pulled it over to the side of the road and we both got out.
As my mom looked under the hood I looked to the sky. As I watched the sky a large bird flew over. Instead of a feather falling a scale dropped at my feet. I reached down and grabbed it. It was triangle shaped, black, smooth and a little smaller than my palm.
I open my empty gold heart shaped locket hanging around my neck and placed it inside. Suddenly the car started back up again, startling me. "Come on! We need to get to the new house!" I nod and get back in. As we drove off I fell asleep the locket clutched in my hand.
That was two days ago. Currently I am lost, sitting in the corner of a cave, a dragon sitting over me. The dragon is trying to protect me. Why? Because he is my friend. How did this come about? I'll tell you.
When we reached our new home for the first time my mom told me to take a walk. I did and found myself lost. It started to rain, usually I love the rain but since I didn't know where I was I took shelter at the back of a cave.
I sat there shivering, when the dragon walked in. It was large and covered with black scales. It's eyes though, they were big and gold and round with cat-like puipls. It bared down on me I though I was going to die. That's when I remembered the scale in my locket that I had picked up earlier that day.
I fumbled with it but finally got it open. I took the scale out and held it up, why? I have no idea. It was startled but then it did something completely unexpected, it spoke. "That is my scale. How did you get it?" I was shocked but answered the question anyway. "I found it. It landed at my feet while you flew over the freeway today." It nodded and gently picked me up by my shirt and carried me deeper into the cave.
I freaked and tried to get out of its grasp. "Stop moving or you will fall and I won't catch you." It growled so I stopped moving. When we reached the back of the cave it opened up. It was a massive cave with a human - sized hole in the roof. He curled up like a cat and only set me down when he had curled his tail around me. "What are you going to do to me?" I ask, strangely calm. "Right now I'm going to go to sleep. When morning comes I'll decide what to do with you." I gulped and nodded.
He let go of me with his tail then curled in tight around me, forcing me to lean against his cheek. I had one last question though. "Will you eat me?" He chuckled. "If I was going to eat you I would have already. Now shut up and go to sleep." I did as I was told and fell asleep only to be bombarded by dreams of riding dragonback.
I woke up with a scream. In my dream I had just fallen of this dragons back and he couldn't reach me fast enough. The dragon woke at my scream but all he saw was me crying simply because I was scared. He gently nosed me in the back, catching my attention. "Why are you crying?" He asked. I wipe my tears and say, "I'm fine. It was just a bad dream." He nodded and continued as if that had never happened.
"What is your name boy?" "My name is Jay. What's yours?" He grimaced a bit and murmured, "My name is Tantor." He looked at me, expecting me to laugh. I thought it was a good name. He lifted and eyebrow and asked, "Why aren't you laughing?" "Why would I laugh? I think it's a nice name." If dragons could blush he would've. He wrapped his tail around my waist and placed me on his head. From there he lifted me to the hole in the ceiling.
I climbed out and turned to address him. "Goodbye Tantor. You may have saved my life last night." Before he could respond I ran home, my house in my sight.
