So... Joshua had gotten into a bit of a sticky situation.

His mother had finally made up with the family, and she decided to stay with her boyfriend at the house.

Joshua, still displeased about the state Rikki had left the family in, had tried to dismiss her during a talk, but ended up agreeing to go to one of her performances.

Although he would rather castrate himself than watch his mother enjoy herself, his sister and father had watched the entire thing play out, and forced him to attend the performance at the local club.

Just recently broken up, Joshua's plus-one was Julie, who was the most excited about seeing their mother perform (although she was extremely quiet about it.)

So, he sat at the bar, ordered a glass of rosé at the expensive restaurant-slash-bar, and sipped on it lightly, his sister sitting down to occupy the barstool next to him.

Julie swung around in the turning stool. "Why the long face, Joshy?"

Joshua scowled. "Fuck off, Jules."

She held her hands up. "Fine! Fine! I know you're not happy about her coming back so suddenly, but just remember..." her hand tightened around the Bud Light she ordered, pushing herself up. "She's trying. Even if she doesn't succeed, that's all that matters."

Joshua watched her go with a rueful expression. His eyes finally glanced away and to the stage where a young woman had just finished setting up with a percussionist, a bassist, and a pianist.

She sat down at the stool, adjusting her microphone stand and smiling. "Hey, everyone!"

She was cheerful although no one responded, and continued with her short monologue. "I'm (Y/n), one of your scheduled entertainers for tonight. I've brought with me some friends; Will on percussion," said person played a short drumroll. "Daniel on bass," Dan played a bass rift. "And Junior on piano," Junior started with the intro of your first song.

"We'll be performing a few originals for you today, and we hope you enjoy them."

Joshua was reeled in the moment her fingers picked and strummed delicately against the strings of her guitar, her voice coming perfectly in tune with the music that was crescendoing around her. Her eyes were closed and you could tell the music meant something to her, and she was delivering each word painfully and beautifully.

Riki looked over her shoulder to see her son enchanted by the music. His eyes were glued to the stage, and a huge smile shaped his lips.

The song slowed down for the bridge, and it was a single strum that carried her voice up, and her voice seemed to tiptoe over it.

The soft melody had a hush sent through the entire bar, and her voice rose as she pulled the entire band into the last chorus.

The song ended and the entire crowd burst into cheers and claps, and her eyes danced around the room, as she laughed and thanked the crowd.

Her eyes met Joshua's, and they both just stared for a few moments until both simultaneously smiled, feeling the connection immediately.

"This next song's dedicated to my soulmate."
