The Shirt

Julie looked at the clothes rail in Next. It had a lovely navy collarless shirt on it that looked like something that Neil Pearson would wear.

She had been sitting in the park for most of the day, with not much to do. She had a cup of coffee in the local parks café and and had read three whole Hello type magazines.

The shop was fairly empty, she quickly looked around it to see if anyone could see what she was doing, as she had just got a picture up of Neil Pearson on her new Iphone, and it looked a bit weird.

She had already been downstairs looking at the jewellery and watches, and belts, but had no money left after her perfume splurge in Boots.

She remembered when Neil Pearson was in Between The Lines and Drop The Dead Donkey, and more recently that choir thing that he was in with Sarah Alexander. He always said such profound honest things, and you could listen to him all day, which she frequently did as she was unemployed and addicted to Iplayer.

She decided that she would buy him a shirt from Next and send it to his fan club. He might not like it but it would be the thought that counts, and she loved buying things for people because it made her feel good.

She chose a black and white dogtooth long sleeved shirt and took it to the blonde Polish female shop assistant, who gave her a big smile, as she had already been in the shop for about two hours.

"It's for Neil" she told the shop assistant proudly. "He deserves it". The shop assistant gave Julie a strange look, and then a forced smile as she put through the shirt on the till.

Julie left the shop, and paid for the car park, then got in her car and drove out of the car park to her house. She lived in a small terraced house in an old street with a church at the end of it and a childrens park.

Neil Pearson was sitting in his lounge. It was a lovely room, full of Persian rugs and leather armchairs.

He loved to sit by the fire and drink a glass of Courvoisier of an evening, a slightly extravagant drink, but one he enjoyed., He also liked to go to the local pub, and discuss who he thought should win X factor, in the warm surroundings of pub bar. He kept Courvoisier in a Chippendale drinks cabinet that he called Tabitha in his lounge, along with his stash of walnut whips and old copies of Antique Collector, that he loved to hoard.

His wife bought all his clothes, mainly in Marks and Spencers or occasionally he would get dragged to Bluewater for buying things for special occasions such as Goodwood or posh antiques evenings in posh hotels that he liked to go to. He always got bored and wandered off to find a quiet café, where he read a good book over his Espresso. His blue eyes dulled in boredom, while he was sipping from the cup, and he frowned sincerely.

He loved all the people that he met there. Last year he met this amazing woman who had seven cats at home, and was a yoga teacher. She gave him one of her DVDs. He loved to do the tree position by the fire on a Sunday night.

His wife was called Rose, he had met her on the set of Between The Lines, quite a few years ago. They didn't really talk any more, and rarely had sex, they just vaguely communicated with each other if either of them was going through a bad patch.

Today he was wearing an old fred perry polo shirt and a brown cashmere cardigan, along with a pair of Levi jeans that his daughter had picked up for him last time she went to New York.

Today he was sitting on his sofa drinking some coffee out of a Clarice Cliff teacup when he heard the letterbox go. He walked towards the front door, nearly tripping over the cat, who frowned at him, he leant down and stroked her. "Lovely Puss" he said.

He picked up the package and opened it with intruige, he loved to receive presents, he remembered how as a child he enjoyed the anticipation of Christmas Eve.

His daughter loved going to New York, she was studying fashion, and loved to get inspiration from the wild eccentric surroundings. Her favourite place was Bloomingdales. He missed her as she was living in France at the moment.

Julie was at home. She had just made herself a cup of tea. She liked strong tea. It was made in her favourite white mug. She was thinking about sending Alexi Sayle some Hummus from Marks and Spencer, as he was Greeek wasn't he?. However she was not sure how she could send that?
