They said that if you made a wish on the time of 11:11, it'd come true. If you made a wish on a shooting star it'd come true, if I threw a coin into a wishing well, that what I wanted to happened, really happen, it will. But luck was not what woke him.

"Aaliyah, is that the last box?" Mum asks as I carry my book box to the car.
"Yeah, it is." I push it into the boot and close it. Turning back to our old house which became the place of bad memories, she pulls me into a bear hug.
"Here's to new beginnings baby girl." New beginnings. I like the sound of that.
The memories we had here were tattooed all over the house. A big four bedroom home for two was not the way wanted to spend this summer. Maines Bay was our next destination. It had been mum's old home town and what could be better than go back to a familiar place.
I remember spending my summer there as a kid, the friends I only saw once a year and the father I use to have. After mum found him having what looked like a nude wrestling match in their bed, she chased both of them out with a frying pan.
That was ten years ago and from that day on wards, my dad made sure to make mum's life a living hell. He has a new family now that he can't stop boasting about every time he comes to family events. That's right, even after all that he's done, he's still invited. That is only because he is my Aunt Christy's new husband. My dad decided that he was bored with my mother and moved onto her sister.
"Are you excited?" Mum says, waking me up mid day dreaming.
"Uh, excited?" I grabbed a packet of pineapple lumps and shoved a handful in my mouth.
She laughs, "Yes, excited to finish off your last year of school is what I meant."
"What? Buuyousaididonaveto?" My mouth muffled by the amount of candy.
"Oh, Ali when did I say that?" We pass the Maines Bay sign, that has the population of two thousand and eighty-four written on it with a carving of a merman holding a trident next to it.
"Last night? Don't you remember woman?" I sat back knowing that her answer will always and forever be final.
"You mean when I was finishing off the wine from the cellar?" She giggled.
Trying to ignore her laughter I couldn't help but join her. My life at school was nothing but boredom. I had a few friends, not best ones. My half-sisters, Shay and Britney, (my father's kids) that were the same age as me (that's right, he was cheating on my mum while she was carrying me.) made sure I couldn't make any. Yet I knew I didn't need them. Maines Bay was a haven I knew only belonged to me and not them.
I remember an old friend Maddie that I use to skype every now and then and hoped she'd remember me, but ever since mum and dad had a divorce all those years ago my mother never had the time to take me down till now. Like she said, new beginnings. And I am ready to take on anything that came my way.

I stared into the mirror and felt nothing but disappointment. Maines Bay High School was one of the only high schools I knew around here that didn't have a strict uniform code, and wearing whatever the hell you wanted was cool. But in my case a uniform would've been the hottest thing I had ever owned in my wardrobe. I pulled my brown hair into a low ponytail, wore blue jeans and a grey shirt, finished off with a pair of vans. I'm sussed. I got this.
I give up trying to make myself look presentable and raced down the stairs following the smell of bacon and eggs.
"Why don't you wear your hair down for today, it's pretty." Mum commented as I stuffed a muesli bar into my bag.
"Of course you'd say that, you're my mother. It's in the manual you get once you get a boring child like me." I snickered and piled my plate high with scrambled eggs and multiple strips of bacon.
"Well you sure are hungry." She rounded the bench and handed me a twenty-dollar note.
"Mum, it's okay, please. I'm only eating like a rubbish truck so I can avoid finding a seat at the lunch cafe. This has always been my go to." I pushed the money away. She shrugged and kissed me on the forehead.
"Well eat up, we need to head out. I was able to get that summer job down at Gloria's takeout, you remember Gloria? She had a daughter too... What was her name again?"
I jumped up, "Matilda?"
"Yes! Matilda! She told me to drop you off at the takeout's, she can drive you to school."
It had been five years since I had heard from her. After my dad admitted to not wanting anything to do with us, we stopped coming here. He was the evil villain that brought a end on my fairy tale life as a kid.

Mum parks the car outside, I hop out and examine the place that became a second home to me; Gloria's takeout restaurant.
"Why don't you come in and we'll have a talk with Gloria about part timing for you?"
"Mum, no! You know how weird I am. Can you really imagine me as a waitress?"
She looked away for a moment contemplating.
"Really, mum?" I stared at her incredulously.
I followed her in and was overwhelmed by the smell of coffee and apple pie. I had just gone to heaven, seriously.
"Oooooh Candice! Is this her? Is this little Ali?" A beautiful round woman came bursting through the kitchen doors. Gloria had always been the comforting type. Mum disappeared off to start her shift.
We sat down with her as she gushed over how much I had grown. I shrunk down into the chairs smiling awkwardly.
"Looks like you guys might be running late, Maddie has too many friends, picking them up and all. The girl thinks she can do all that in my car." Gloria shakes her head.
Last time I remembered, the only friends she had was me. But five years ago just before we started high school, she'd told me how different Maines bay had become. I wondered whether she was part of that change too.
The door opened and a small group of teenagers filed in. The took up a spot in the far corner of the diner, all their faces unfamiliar. I felt a pang of envy, here all these people grew up together and I come in at the end of the year. Nice one, Aaliyah.
"Jonthan, where's Maddie?" Gloria calls out to the little crowd.
A boy with blonde windswept hair and light green eyes walked over to us, he had an air of authority that he knew he wore well. It seemed as if he were the leader of the group, since they all stopped talking and turned their attention towards us. Please, if there is anyone out, please let there be a black hole beneath my feet to swallow me up, I prayed.
