Make them unique!
Not too unique though, or you may have created a Mary ( Gary ) Sue!
Make sure your character has flaws, and isn't too much of a copy of someone else's character!
Make sure they have a decent name, backstory and personality..
Here's an example of a Good and Bad Character -

Bad -
Name - Princess Kitty the Third
Age - 100380 years old but looks 20
Gender - SEXY FEMALE
Appearance-
Flowing long hair with all the colours of the rainbow! Beautiful and always wears dresses and the rarest items! Is a mixture of Dragon, Cat, Dinosaur, Wolf, Fairy! She can summon anything! She has no weaknesses and is invincible
Personality -
- Pretty
- Likeable
- Loved by everyone
- Popular
- No flaws
Backstory-
Nah.. She's too good for a backstory

Decent/Good -
Name - Jenna
Age - 18
Gender - Female
Appearance -
Short brown hair and faded green eyes, She usually wears an ordinary grey shirt and jean shorts. She also wears grey sneakers
Personality -
- Quiet
- Sensitive
- Humorous
- Caring
Backstory -
Jenna lived an ordinary life in the woods, she loves nature and all it's mysteries! Jenna has always been a curious kid and isn't open to many people. She's usually quiet and likes to draw on her free time

So don't over-do your OC!
