chapter one

My name is Dakota Haul. I am fifteen years old. And I am a vampire fledgling. I have an older brother. His name is Bryson. My mother is Jayme and my father is Parker. My family is... unique, to say the least. We all have special powers. I have the power to cloud vision and I also have the power of telekinesis. My brother has manic strength and the ability to heal others and himself in the moonlight. My mother has the power of charisma and she can sense when evil or another vampire is coming. And my father has the power to cause complete terror and has the ability to change shape and form. We are the only ones amongst our people with powers like these. Other vampires are just strong and can glamour humans and other vampires if they've been practicing long enough. That's why we're special. Except we have sworn to our maker. The first vampires created, Ramus and Caidon, that we wouldn't use our powers against any other vampires or humans.

On Monday afternoon I awoke and walked downstairs to get breakfast. Vampires usually wake up at five thirty in the afternoon and go to sleep at six in the morning. The sun doesn't burn us up. It kind of bothers our eyes though. We can eat regular food just as any human can. Vampire fledglings don't really drink blood. Some do but I don't. I've never tried it. But full blooded vampires have to have blood. If they don't, they become weak and it causes them pain. I made a bowl of cookie crisp cereal and sat down at the kitchen table with my family.

"Hey, loser." Bryson grinned, scrunching up my hair. I glared at him and ate my cereal. Then I looked over to my father. He was reading the news paper.

"Hey, honey. What are you doing after school today?" my mother asked.

"Why?" I asked, confused. My mother and I never really got along. She was always dumping on my relationship with my human boyfriend. His name is Christopher. We've been dating for three years now.

"I thought we could maybe hang out."

"Uh, I can't today. I'm meeting Christopher after school. He's picking me up there."

"You know how I feel about you dating him. Dakota, you need to find someone of your own kind."

"I don't like any of the other guy vampires. They're jerks. Besides, I like Christopher. That's it. End of discussion. Bye, Daddy." I grimaced at her and kissed my dad on the cheek. I grabbed Bryson's arm and pulled him out of the door. We went to school.

I walked in through the doors of our big school. I went to my locker to get my books and went to homeroom. My best friend, Courtney Risher, came running up to my seat.

"Hey, Dakota. Did you hear about the new kid?"

"What new kid?"

"I guess not. Well anyway, I heard there was going to be a new guy coming to our school next week a week. I hope he's cute."

"Where did you hear that there was a new guy coming?"

"I heard the bitch squad talking about it."

"Let me guess. Chelsea is going to try and throw herself at him, isn't she?"

"I wouldn't be surprised if she did. She's a freaking slut."

"You got that right." And as if she could hear us, Chelsea came in the room and bumped into Courtney. Chelsea had auburn hair and blue eyes. She had it all. A perfect face, a perfect body, a perfect everything. But she was truly ugly underneath it all. She had a heart of stone. She was so stuck on herself.

"Uh, stay out of my way, geek." She said in a discusting tone. I stood up, angry.

"I suggest you back off of my friend right now. Because you've just pissed me off."
