"I Love You"

2nd Person POV. Tags: Romance, Breakup, Accident

Your boyfriend, Caleb, broke up with you, but you both decide to still try to be friends.

As you were trying to stay friends he invites you and your friend, Marissa, to hang out at his house, just like you used to. You decided to go to the Subway Restaurant, near his house, for dinner. Once the three of you get there you realize you don't have your wallet and refuse to let Caleb pay for your food.

"I'm not really hungry anyways," you say. "But you and Marissa can get yourselves food."

Caleb gets to the counter and starts to order, "6-inch pizza sub on italian herb and cheese."

"Caleb I said not to," you say, irritated.

"Shredded cheese and toasted. It's fine, promise," Caleb responds before ordering his own sub.

You storm out of the store and begin walking back to his house. You check the road before crossing but don't see the black car whip around the corner of the street, until it's too late. The car hits you and you roll across the hood. The driver slams on the brakes sending you to the ground and skidding across the pavement.

Marissa and Caleb both ignore the squeal of the tires, from inside the store, as it isn't uncommon. Once Marissa finishes her order she leaves the store to go look for you. The sound of incoherent blabbering has her looking towards the man pacing in front of his car and the shape of her best friend strewn across the road. Marissa runs a little closer to the road praying she's wrong and that it isn't you lying battered, bloody, and bruised, across the road. But as she gets closer, her heart sinks. She turns on her heel and runs back to the store.

"Caleb. Ther- I- Car accident, come," Marissa rushes out, as soon as she opens the door.

Caleb drops his wallet and runs out the door with Marissa by his side. As they approach you, Caleb starts muttering 'No' over and over again. He drops to his knees right beside you, grabbing your hand and holding on for dear life. There is a line of blood from the corner of your mouth and out of your nose. Tears start to fall silently from his eyes as Marissa pulls out her phone and calls 911. She's in shock, which has her completely calm and rational as she gives the dispatcher the address of the accident. Caleb looks at you and you turn your head towards him.

"I love you," you say.

"I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I'm sorry," he says.

The ambulance arrives and the paramedics put you onto the stretcher and they say only one of your friends can come with you in the ambulance. Before they decide you struggle to ask for both. The paramedics decide to bend the rules and let both Marissa and Caleb into the back of the ambulance. They climb in beside you and the paramedics shut the doors. Marissa rubs Caleb's back as his silent tears have turned into full out sobbing. Caleb holds tightly to your hand as the ambulance speeds to the hospital. While inside the ambulance, Marissa calls your parents who say they will meet you at the hospital. You arrive to the emergency room before your parents, so, Marissa and Caleb run alongside the stretcher as far as into the hospital they're allowed.

You garble out one final "I love you." and you swear you hear him say it back.

"I love you"
