The American School: The Wild Blue Yonder
"Come on Aiden!" Called a woman in her late thirties named Patricia, the only thing that showed her age was the few grey hairs starting to show in her auburn hair. Well that and her two kids, my brother and myself. “Where’s your brother?” My mother ased impatient with our slow pace.
Looking around I realized my brother had wondered off once again. Scanning the crowd I finally found James, sitting in a massage chair in Sharper Image. Idiot. My brother like myself, inherited our father's jet black hair but instead of my dad’s hazel eyes like my brother I received my mother’s ice blue eyes. Jogging over I grabbed James by the arm and yanked him to his feet. “We need to go now. If you don't want to get in trouble I suggest you get to the gate before Mom does." I hissed at him. With a mumbled crap James grabbed his bag and started running to the gate.
“James sent me a text saying he's at the gate." I lied to my mom as I caught up to her.
"Oh thank God,” she exclaimed visibly relieved “he must not have realized that we stopped to go to the bathroom earlier." She continued swallowing my lie like a piece of candy
After we got settled into our seats a pretty twenty-something blonde flight attendant walked up to us and asked if one of us wanted to move up to first class to even out the weight distribution. My mother turned to me and told me. "Aiden you’re the oldest you should go."
“No mom you've had a stressful day you go, don't worry I'll watch James." I responded.
A warm smile seeps across her face as she asks, “Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure" I reassured her before adding, "Go relax we'll see you when we land."
"Thank you Aiden, really." With a hug for each of us she stood up and walked forward to the first class seating.
As the curtain separating the cabins closed I turned to my brother. "Why’d you wander off like that? You knew that mom was already stressed out." I whisper-yelled at him as I swatted his shoulder.
"Ouch what was that for?" James asked rubbing his shoulder wincing slightly.
"That was for making me cover for you." I snapped.
Humbled he turned towards the window before speaking up.
“Ok, thank you for saving me from Mom," he replied sounding almost apologetic.
“Whatever," I turned away from him and put my head phones in. It's not that I don't love my brother; I do, but how could a thirteen year old be so stupid? Pushing all thoughts out of my head I passed into musical oblivion.
An hour of music later I fell asleep. Only to be woken up by someone gently tapping my shoulder. "Mmrrmm five more minutes Momm." I begged sleepily while turning my body away from my awakener. Apparently what I said was funny, because a burst of giggles exploded behind me but quickly died. Upon hearing the laughter my body went rigid. That's not my mother. Slowly turning around I faced the source of the laughter. My eyes fell upon a pretty blonde girl around my age. She had an athletic build like she liked to run. Her face was quickly dropping the last traces of amusement. Her expression hardened, but I saw sadness in her red tinged eyes.
