"Come out of the house we know you're in there!" A microphone voice yelled from outside. Matthew knew it was the police, he knew they'd come after him eventually.

"Mattie you have to get out of here like right now!" His brother said handing him his back pack.

"What?!" Matthew half yelled "I'm not going anywhere other than to turn myself in."

"Turn yourself in?!" The taller boy sounded shocked and angry. "I'm sorry I didn't realize that you're crazy!!"

"I don't know what else to do! I mean look at me Al! I've been in hiding for months because I'm wanted for a crime that I committed!" Matthew lowered his eyes to the floor "I'm tired of running and hiding. I just want it to be over."

"You'll get killed I mean-" He started but was quickly cut off

"Let him do it." said another boy coming in the room

"Gil?" Matthew looked at his friend surprised at what had been said.

"Come out or we're coming in!" The voice from outside said louder now, almost irritated.

"He has a better chance in court if he just turns himself in and you know that. Heck he'll have a better chance of not being shot to death."

Matthew could hear the uncertainty is his voice "I'll see you both soon. Don't get caught and thank you, for everything" He gave them both a hug before setting down the backpack and walking out the front door.

One Year Earlier:

Matthew walked down the steps and found his way to the kitchen. His family would still be asleep in the big house, all except him and his older sister. He made himself a bowl of cereal and enjoyed the silence before his sister Ennis came down the stairs. "Come on we're going to be late" the red headed teen huffed getting a package of poptarts and practically dashing out the door. Matthew knew she would leave him if he didn't go outside right away so he put his bowl in the sink, grabbed his backpack and went out to his sister's car. Being a year older than Matthew and a senior in high school, Matthew relied on her for a ride to anywhere he couldn't walk, school being one of the major ones.

"You're so slow" she told him already starting to back out of the driveway. Matthew ran and got in on the passenger side before she drove off. "You're too fast..." He whined.

"As if, so anyways we have an awards assembly today"

"Okay."

"That's it just 'Okay'? You don't think you'll get any awards?"

He shook his head "I never do." Matthew didn't exactly get noticed at school and when he did it was only when teachers unwantedly called on him in class or when he had to point out that they had missed his name on roll call. He would usually get made fun of after that, calling him ghost or sitting on him because the seat was 'empty'. He began liking it when he wasn't noticed.

When they got to school the siblings went their separate ways. Ennis to her eagerly awaiting crowd of friends and Matthew to an empty bench. He pulled out his phone and earbuds and listened to music. He watched the world around him before dozing off.

His earbuds being ripped out of his ears Matthew was woke by a voice saying "Hey wake up!"

Matthew opened his violet eyes to be very close to a pair of red ones. "oh you're awake" The owner of the red eyes moved away from him and Matthew adjusted his glasses. He examined the other boy in front of him, red eyes, white hair, and pale skin. Strange, Matthew had never seen anyone like him.

Matthew looked around, becoming worried "oh my gosh...How long was I asleep?!" He stood up quickly and started to fall

"Wait-" The boy caught Matthew before he could fall over and sat him back on the bench. "Just take it easy, schools over anyway."

"Over? I slept through the whole school day?"

"You did? Awesome." The boy sat beside him.

"Even my own sister didn't notice..." He sighed. He pulled his phone out of his pocket, it was dead. "Just great.."he mumbled. He grabbed his backpack and stood up slower this time."Thanks for waking me up. I should get home" He waved and started walking down the sidewalk.
"Hey wait!" The white haired boy called after him. "If you have a long way to go I can drive you home!"

Matthew knew not to accept rides from strangers but home wasn't exactly walking distance so he accepted.

He was lead to a nice looking black truck.but from what he could tell it was old. An awkward silence filled the truck until the driver broke the ice. "Soooo, what's your name?"

"Matthew Williams, you?" He could tell they were in the same grade but it was a big school, You didn't always know everyone.

"Gilbert Beilschmidt . Only the awesomest of the awesome."

"I've never seen anyone like you before."

"I've never seen anyone sleep through school on a bench before"

Matthew started at his phone a moment "yeah.. Pardon for asking but what were you doing after school so late?"

"Spying on my brother." Gilbert said with a simple smirk. Matthew now noticed Gilbert's German accent. Guessing that his brother was Ludwig, an underclassman who's best friend would often invite him to eat lunch with them; he decided that if Gilbert was anything like his brother, he was a good person.

After confusing themselves over Matthews poor directions and Gilbert almost hitting pedestrians, they made it to Matthews house. "No way! you live here?!" The albino said in awe at the big house.

"um...yeah, why?" Matthew said getting out of the car.

"I pass by it all the time and think, 'wow wouldn't it be awesome to live there?' then I say 'graduate and you might get a nice house' and then I drive off." Gilbert replied with wild hand gestures and changes in his tone of voice for effect.

"Would you like to come in?" Matthew asked him.

Gilbert thought for only a second. "Heck yeah!"

and the two went inside.
