When The Clock Strikes One

9 0 1

The branches scrapping the window sounded like nails scratching the glass, trying to get in. They were branches, right? Or was someone really trying to get in?
Frustrated with her imagination, Samantha groaned and turn to her side, at a loss of sleep. She glanced at the digital clock by her bed. It blinked 1.00am. Sam flipped onto her back and stared at the ceiling. She was about to groan again, but was cut short.
The door of her closet creaked open. Sam watched in horror as her old doll, Bellé, stepped out. One of her shoes was missing. Her faded blue dress was covered in cobwebs, and was torn at places. The doll shook her tangled red curls and started to hobble towards the door.
Sam let out a gasp of shock, but quickly clapped her hand over her mouth.
Too late.
Bellé's head snapped up and she slowly turn to face Sam. Her face was covered in dirt, her painted red lips chipped. A piece of her cheek was missing, showing the wooden frame inside.
When she took a step forward, Sam saw her eyes. The weren't like she remembered them to be. They were glowing red. Not the soft baby blue. Her heart shaped mouth slowly curled into a sneer as she made her way towards the bed.
Bellé's glare was fixed on Sam's wide gaze as she reached out to scramble onto the duvet. That's when Sam noticed her nails. They were caked with blood.
To her utmost shock, the doll crawled onto Sam's stomach and looked down at her.
Bellé let out a shrill laugh which echoed through the room. She kept laughing till Sam's ears hurt.
When she finally stopped, the doll bent over Sam and said in a raspy voice –“You've seen too Sam, you've seen too much.”
And Sam watched in horror as the doll's sharp nails pierced her chest, spilling out blood.

Sweating hard, Sam sat up. It took her a couple of seconds to realise it was a dream. Or a nightmare. But still not real.
She didn't realise she was holding her breath, and let it out in a long whoosh. Wiping the forehead with her sleeve, she absently glanced at the clock.

12.59

Her breath caught in her throat as she gaped at the clock. She tried to get out but found herself tangled in the covers. She tried to free herself but couldn't.
Her heart skipped a beat. She stopped struggling and sat sank back into her pillows. She glanced at her clock. Just as it blinked 1, the closet door creaked open and a tiny shoeless, socked foot stepped out.
