Okay, to be honest, Jessica was done with life anyway. After having multiple classes every single day, sometimes late into the night, she was just about done with it all. But, she always reminded herself that she got into Kenyon University using her own smarts and she wasn't about to give up and throw away all of that scholarship money that she deserved.
After her final lab class of the week finished at 9 o' clock at night, Jessica was ready to just go back to her dorm and hibernate until spring. So, she texted her roommate, Suzy, to let her know that she was on her way back and that Suzy had better have saved some pasta for Jessica, because she was starving. When she got a response, it was a simple "ok," without any preamble. This was a little strange to Jessica because Suzy always decorates her texts with emojis galore and would be typing some optimistic message in all caps. But, Jessica just shrugged it off. Maybe Suzy had a bad day or something.
So, walking back alone in the brisk weather, Jessica headed towards the looming building in the distance. While the school was beautiful during the day, it looked haunting at night.
When she stepped into the building, Jessica didn't even bother calling out hello to anyone else in her dormitory, she just wanted to head straight up to her warm bed. But, as she ascended the stairs, another girl feels the need to call out, "Hey, Jess!"
Jessica, annoyed at the nickname, turned around to snap, "What?" The girl then sheepishly replied, "I think Suzy has a guy up in your room. You can sleep in my room tonight, if you need it." Confused, Jessica said, "Suzy would tell me if she brought a guy back.... I'll take you up on your offer if you're right, though." The girl smiled in acceptance, and ducked back inside her room.
Jessica didn't really know what to think anymore. Maybe she really didn't know her roommate. So, she climbed the stairs with renewed vigor to demand that Suzy tell her everything.
But, when Jessica entered her room, no one was there. Confused Jessica called out for the other girl, but no response came. Starting to question how weird this situation was, Jessica decided to head into the kitchen to eat some leftover pasta... only to find an empty pot lying on the ground and no Suzy in sight.
Heading back into the living room area, Jessica saw something that she didn't see before, due to the fact that she was now entering at a different angle. Jessica looked towards the bookshelf and all she could hear was the ringing in her ears from her own screams ripping free from her throat.
There, on the shelf, was the severed head of Suzy. It had been placed next to the carefully arranged textbooks and pleasure reading novels. Right after a Mary Stewart book, the flesh was placed in alphabetical order: Suzy. The blank eyes stared out across the room, unmoving and glassy. Pieces of flesh were clinging to the serrated skin and red red blood soaked into the pages of the books.
Before Jessica could even turn around, a heavy hand fell on her shoulder and hot breath blew against her ear as a deep voice said cheerfully, "Don't worry, I don't even have to ask for your name. Suzy already told me. I'll—I'll take good care of you. Don't worry. Don't worry. All brains are stories and stories belong on bookshelves. Stories belong on bookshelves. STORIES BELONG ON BOOKSHELVES!"
With the final words of the man, Jessica's head was sliced clean of her body. The man delicately picked up the head and placed it onto the bookshelf right before Stephen King, in alphabetical order: Jessica. Then, with his work done, the man left the dorm, never to be seen from or heard from again.

A/N: The murderer was never caught. Another friend from their dorm found the bodies after the girls missed class. Given the time this happened, the murderer may still be alive today, though a similar murder has yet to be found. Yay! Sweet nightmares, my pretties! ;)
