There were two people walking on the sandy beach. They've actually been there for quite a while. They were two brother and sister having a look at what their childhood beach turned out to be. Gone was the clear blue water, and in its place was dark, foamy water filled with waste. Where there used to be a clear and sunny sky, was a foggy and cold sky. Disappointed in their findings, they made their way back to their homes. They saw some smoke in the sky, but thought nothing of it. They were born at different times, the sister being 15 and the brother being 13. The sisters name is Casey, and she has always wanted to be a detective when she grows up and has learned many of their techniques. The brothers name is Jonas, and he would rather be a simple teacher and has read a vast variety of books to increase his knowledge. Halfway there, a mysterious car stopped them in their tracks. The window rolled down and saw that it was their landlord, Alfred. But they could tell that something was wrong by the look of sorrow on his face.
"What's wrong Alfred? "They asked.
"I'm afraid I have some grave news for you, while you were gone at the beach your house has burned down." he replied.
With faces of shock they asked, "How?"
"They have been searching the rubble, but have not found the source of the fire."
"But I am most saddened to say that...your parents did not escape in time."
They were both speechless that so much happened in the time that they were gone. With a look of understanding, Alfred led them to his car to go and see the place they once called home.
Alfred was the first to see the remains of the house. "Get ready" he said. They looked over and gasped. Their once beautiful home, made of fine brick and wood was not burnt bricks and ashes. "Can we look around?" Jonas asked. Alfred thought about it for a minute before saying, "go ahead, I'm sure no one would mind." As they got out of the car and walked on the remains of their home, they noticed that almost nothing survived. The library where they spent most of their time was gone. As well as the dining room where they ate their meals as a family. The only things standing was the beams that used to hold up the roof, and the spiral staircase that led up to where the second floor used to be. They went to the spot where their parents room would have been located and looked around in sorrow. That is, until Jonas found some strange items. In the ash, barely visible were two items, an empty metal gas tank and a charred knife that still had some sharpness to it.
"Hey, look at this" he said.
Casey walked over and inspected the items. They spent awhile, trying to brainstorm why these items would be in their parents' room. Until a crazy idea popped into her head
"What if it wasn't an accident." she blurted out.
"What?"
"I meant, what if someone broke into the house to kill them, and started the fire to hide their tracks." she explained.
"That's crazy, who would want to hurt our parents, they never did anything wrong. "He asked.
"I don't know, but it's just an idea...and I'm going to find out.
As they walked out of the ash and rubble, they agreed on keeping all of this a secret from their landlord. He was a generous man, but has always been a coward at the first sign of danger. They would tell them when they were done. He let them sleep at his house, as he filled out suitable foster home applications. He also gave them a good sized room to sleep in as they mourn their losses as long as they do not, under any circumstances, enter his room. Normally they would have done that, but Casey's idea was too important and ignored the room. Luckily, Casey knows how to collect fingerprints. The items are badly burned, but it's worth a try. Alfred tried to make them go to sleep, but they ignored him, as he limped away.
