Probably the most important thing about reading is knowing if you can trust the author to continue updating. This is why I always start reading after the book is completed, or I find out whether an author can be trusted. I've dealt with a bit of... trauma when reading a book and finding out that the author has disappeared, or has stopped updating randomly. In fact, I'll give an example of an author that has disappeared.
@Chlobuggy wrote the book The Game. I loved this book so much, but the idiot me forgot to check if there was a sequel and see if it was updated. sadly, I found out that it was updated about a year ago, maybe 2 now. you probably never want to be in the same position as I when I read that book. The author left off at such a sad place that I wanted to cry, and to be honest, I did tear up a little. I also want to note that you should NEVER blame the author if s/he disappeared. You do not know what is happening in their lives. You don't know if s/he has gotten into a car crash and died, went into a coma, or went into a depression. You don't know! You should just breathe and move on. Its hard to do, but you feel so much better than if you push blame onto someone.
So, you should ALWAYS check the book's last update and it's sequel's last update.
