"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Los Angeles. We will be arriving shortly, so please fasten your seat belts and put your table trays in their upright and locked positions. I hope you enjoyed the flight and thank you for choosing American Airlines. Have a wonderful stay."
Amy stretched in her seat and lazily did up her seatbelt. She glanced at her watch while managing to suppress a yawn. She wished it were bedtime, as the long plane ride and the cool, dry air from the air conditioners made her feel quite sleepy.
Through the plane window next to her seat, Amy could see a large mass of grey as the plane was coming down on the city of Los Angeles. In all her life, Amy had never seen a city this great in size before. The cities she knew in Kansas would be considered towns when compared to something this vast.
After she got off the plane, Amy went to Baggage Claim to get all her luggage. She then took a taxi that soon dropped her off in front of a large campus just on the edge of the city. She looked at her surroundings and saw Hollywood Hill not too far in the distance, where the famous white letters greeted everyone as they passed by.
In front of her was a large sign that read "Hollywood Hills University: Shoot for the stars!" She stood there for a moment and then exhaled deeply. Taking her boxes and suitcases, she brought herself to walk down the drive toward the campus.
As she walked, Amy noticed many students in their red, black and white plaid uniforms. The girls wore burgundy red jackets and plaid skirts with penny loafers and high knee socks. The boys wore similar jackets over sweaters with ties, slacks and dress shoes. Amy wondered if she'd be in any of the same classes as these students.
"Uh, excuse me. Would you happen to know where the dormitories are?" Amy flagged down an older woman who she assumed was a professor.
"Yes. Just take a left down that path that goes behind the school and there should be a large sign that says 'Dormitories'. Follow the path that leads off it and you'll find what you're looking for! Also, be aware that some of the classrooms are in the same building, in case you may have any there. And if you need any more directions, here's a pamphlet of the campus grounds." She offered Amy a pamphlet.
"Thank you!" She said gratefully. Smiling, she took the pamphlet and started making her way towards the dormitories with all her belongings in tow.
Once the dormitories came into view, Amy stopped for a moment in awe. The building was at least seven stories high and was beautifully built with stone siding and cute windows with dark wooden trim.
There were some tables set up in front of the entrance to the building where a couple of the school's staff members stood with lists in their left hands and pens that advertised the school in their right. A long line formed in front the tables, consisting of many students like Amy: all nervous and excited.
Amy approached the line and stood at the back of it, wondering how long it would take for it to be her turn to know what dorm she was in and who would be her roommate. As she waited, Amy pulled out the pamphlet that the professor gave her and studied the campus's surroundings on the map. She quickly located the dormitories, then let her eyes explore the rest of map. She suddenly felt a giddy feeling from inside wash over her. How could she be so lucky as to go to a campus this beautiful?
Finally, it was Amy's turn in line. A tall young woman with curly brown hair smiled at her and said, "And your name is?" She had a friendly tone to her voice, which eliminated any nervousness Amy had at the moment.
"Amy Whitfield."
"Amy..." The woman scanned her list, dragging her pen down the paper. She paused near the bottom, which made Amy assume the list was in alphabetical order of last names.
"Ah, here we are: 'Amy Whitfield.' You are in room number 18 on floor number 7. And your roommate is Sierra Jones. Here's your key to the dorm." She held out a small key and Amy took it. She said a quick 'thank you' and hurried on toward the building of many bedrooms.
After climbing six sets of stairs while carrying three heavy boxes full of her belongings, Amy finally made it to the 7th floor of the building. She looked at the numbered doors in front of her and quickly figured out which which direction they were going up.
"13....14....15..." Amy walked through the hallway while following the numbered doors until she found the one that was numbered "18". She stopped in front of it, shifted the boxes to her left arm and stuck her key into the doorknob and turned it. She heard a "click" and the door opened.
Amy glanced around her dorm and exhaled deeply. It was larger than what she had originally imagined. The walls were a dark turquoise, which she did not expect the colour to be, but she liked it nonetheless. There was a bed on either side of the room; one for her and the other for her roommate. A large window overlooking the city seemed to determine the middle of the room.
Amy set down her boxes and made toward the window. She peered through the glass down below and saw people scurrying here and there around the campus, carrying boxes or waving their parents goodbye. Her emerald green eyes wandered toward the skyscrapers and buildings in the distance. They refocused and fell upon her own reflection in the glass. 'I can't believe I'm here. I'm actually doing this!' Amy thought to herself.
She was awoken from her thoughts by the creak of a floorboard. Turning, Amy saw a girl standing in the doorway. She was short, about the same height as herself, and had long, straight black-brown hair. Her eye lashes were heavily covered with mascara and eye liner. She wore a knitted sweater that looked like it came from Forever 21, tribal patterned leggings and tan coloured Uggs. To complete her outfit, she held a Starbucks frappuccino in one hand and her iPhone in the other. 'Typical white girl.' Amy thought with a smirk.
"Hi, are you Amy? My roommate?"
"Yeah, I am. And you must be Sierra?"
"Yup." Sierra sipped her Starbucks drink and then scrolled on her phone while she walked to her side of the room and then sat on her bed. Amy thought it was a bit odd that she didn't bring in any of her stuff.
Then, as if on cue, a tall handsome looking guy appeared through the door pulling a bunch of suitcases and carrying heavy boxes with what free hands he had. He stopped in front of Sierra and set everything down beside her bed.
"...and here's your five bucks." Sierra handed the guy a five dollar bill. "Sweet!" he said, staring at the bill as if he couldn't believe she would actually give it to him.
"Thanks Claude!" she called as he was about to leave the room.
"Um, it's Caleb." he corrected.
"Yeah ok, whatever." She mumbled distractedly as she starting texting again.
'So this is who I'm going to be living with for the next eight months.' Amy thought as she started unpacking her things.
