Today was a day for Beethoven, maybe symphony number 5, I thought as I made my way towards the practice room. I hope Mira is not late, said one part of my brain.

She is always late. Another reasoned.

Yes it is true, she is always late. She has been late to class and late to practice for the last 3 months. Ever since her parents...... I stopped that thought she was fine. If she wasn't she would tell me right?

Of cause she would you are her partner and best friend.

But what if she didn't. What if she was in trouble?

An uneasy feeling gripped my heart. I had to call her. Adjusting the cello on my back I fumbled for my phone in my bag.

Sometimes the cello is such a big nuisance.

Aaha, found it.

I speed dialled to Mira's number. She picked up at the third ring.

Hi V, are you there yet. She chirped through the phone.

I frowned, what was she up to now.

No, I am on my way. Where are you?

Somewhere.

You need to be more specific than that.

I am just locking the door.

I knew it, the girl could never be on time. The righteous part of mind said.

Oh shut up, she has work to do. The second argued. And I have to say I was with the second one on this. She has a lot on her plate.

See you then.

Ya see you V.

She is just like she has been for the past two decades, all smiles and chirpiness. But sometimes only sometimes I can catch a glimpse of the sadness beneath it all. Sometimes I can hear the heartbreak in the way she plays her violin. Every note that fills the room a knife to my heart. I wanted to help her. To tell her that it was all right. I was here. To promise I will never leave.

But I know she wouldn't like that. She was too strong and too proud to accept that she was hurting, even to me.

I was so lost in thought that I didn't see the car coming. I don't know what happened and how but I was on the road, my vision was blurry, my ears were ringing, my throat was dry and I could smell blood. I tried to get up. That was when the second impact came. The air was knocked out my lungs as I fell back unconscious.
