When I was 17 years old my best friend got 5 months to live because of an inoperable tumor in her frontal lobe. The day she told me I was sitting there by her side in the hospital room when she told me this quote "I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and have not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it" -Mark Twain. She knew it was my favorite quote I said it at least once a day and she was tired of it. But it reminded me of how someday I would be dead as well, and even though at that time I didn't believe in heaven or god, I believed that something would happen something some sort of magic where my best friend would come back that she would still be with me yawning at the fact I repeat that quote. So I told her "Courage is fear holding on a minute longer" -George S. Patton she used to tell me that quote all the time. She smiled and the doctor came in and said "you can go home tonight but you will have to be back tomorrow morning". So we were on our way home and there's a dunk guy driving behind me. I sped up a little bit to try to get away from him but he sped up and swerved around me getting in front of me and then he hit another car and that caused me to wreck I spun of the road and landed upside down in the median. I blanked out a few minutes later woke up with police cars and people crying an ambulance sirens and firefighters everywhere. When I looked beside me to see that my friend was no longer there. I then yelled for help and I saw probably 20 firefighters coming my way and some medics and a few police. When they got over to me the last thing I heard was "what's your name?" I passed out again because of a brain bleed. They then got me out and on the way to the hospital I coded 3 times in the ambulance, one time I woke up and there my friend was hardly hurt except for a splint on her arm. I smiled and then blacked out again I was in surgery for 8 hours as they tried to evacuate the bleed. I was placed in the CCU (Critical Care Unit) Under 24-hour watch. The next morning, I woke up. I tried to speak but no words came out I was intubated and there was a doctor and my parents talking by the door, I glanced at the papers that said -End of life care- I heard the doctor say "His brain is dead there is nothing else we can do for him, except make him comfortable." The doctor looked over at me and said "Oh my god." My parents turned around and smiled "Derek!" I started to touch the tube I really wanted it out, it hurt like hell. My parents said "he wants it out can you take it out?". The doctor nodded and then they took the tube out of my throat. My mother looked at me and said "how are you feeling?" I hesitated for a moment and looked around the room thinking she would be here. I got pale and a rush of cold shocked through my body I swallowed and weakly said "Meredith?" and then I passed out.
