Kiss and Tell
"Hey, mom?" I squeak as I approach the kitchen table with my messy hair and huge headache. "Are those waffles I smell?"
"Sure are." Mom responds, taking a big swig of her black coffee and reading the business section of the newspaper. I walk up behind her and ruffle her hair sprayed red hair and peck her cheek. "Why are you in such a good mood today?" She asks laughing.
I hop onto the counter, flipping my reddish brown hair. "Guess who got a 2800 on the ACT practice test?"
"Angela?" She jokes. I can picture Angela with her petite body and puffy black hair, as a sly smile expands on her dark skin. I can imagine her running up to me, bragging endlessly about her perfect score. I'm not sure what she got, but I'm sure it's much higher than mine. She so much smarter than I am.
"No!" I whine. "It's your own daughter."
"Congrats, sweet pea." She says smiling. "I'm so proud!"
"Yeah, yeah." I say, taking a bite of a waffle then stomping back to my bedroom.
At school
"A 28?" Mickey repeats, his grey eyes expanding on his small face. "You're practically a genius." He says sarcastically.
I open my mouth to whine to my best guy friend, when I see Mickey's eyes blow up like a child at a candy store. He looks with nervousness over my shoulder, smoothing back his black hair.
"What's up-" I say, before I feel the rush of a cool wind blow across my shoulder. Wes Redd and his sister, Jade, walk past us like supermodels. With their bouncing bleach blonde hair and their expensive clothes, everyone at school either hates them or bows down at their feet. There's no in between. Mickey happens to love Jade. Maybe not so much Wes.
Looking over his shoulder and locking his eyes on mine for a brief moment, he shoots me a curved smile belfry completely ignoring me once again.
No one knows, but Wes was my first kiss. We were thirteen, and I was so entranced with him, it's embarrassing.
Four years earlier
"Wait up, Wes!" I say with my high pitched voice, running in th thick snow. I shake off my boots against the curb when I come face to face with him. Perfect jawline, no acne, and the most gorgeous hair I've ever seen, I can't help but feel like I'm looking at a celebrity.
"Hi." He says with no amusement. He looks sad and bored at be same time, probably no entertained with my basic mannerism and lifestyle. "What do you want?"
I try to catch my breath, the cold air pinching my noise. I pull out the letter from my coat pocket, handing my mitten covered hand over to the boy.
"This is for you." I say in a small voice.
He takes in without taking his empty eyes off of me, placing it in his leather shout bag.
"Is this a love letter for someone? For me?" He asks.
"It's for you. I wrote it for you." I say blushing, looking down at my snow boats.
I feel like an idiot. Wes already knows that I have a crush on him, why do I have to further my embarrassment by writing a lengthy love letter in a Christmas card? I'm such a geek.
I suddenly feel Wes' smooth lips press against my chapped ones, sending sparks up my spine like gasoline set on fire. The kiss was more like a peck. He simply layed his lips on top of mine and let them rest there. So simple yet so exciting for a thirteen year old.
When he pulls away, he doesn't say a word. He looks at me and reaches his hand over to pinch my red cheek.
He the turns away and walks along in the white and thick snow.
"Bye, Wes." I call out to no avail.
Present time
When winter break ended and when I saw him again, he didn't say a word. He didn't even look at me.
No he smiles? We haven't spoken in four years.
"God I hate him." I say.
"I love her." Mickey says. "She's hot."
"Simpleton." I laugh.
