Tides and Torrents (unedited)

Do you see the waves?

The way they crash, and froth, and churn?

Do you see the waves?

The way they abrade, lacerate, perforate

The pathetically, innocently, stark white shore?

Waves that ruthlessly, relentlessly scrabble against the unctuous, diminishi--

A shore with eyes that have cried torrents of tears,

A resonant effect of the constant pounding--an eye for an eye, a tide for a tide,

And a broken heart to echo its anguish,

For having suffered at the hands of the bludgeoning waves.

In this short poem, parallels can be drawn between the shore and the waves and a pair of lovers. It is not uncommon for someone in a relationship to feel battered down, drained, exhausted, on the brink of giving up and having already gone through so much. Like the shore that is slowly chipping away, so one of the two lovers in the relationship feels as though there is nothing that can be done and is at his/her wit's end.
